A snaffle works on the corners of the mouth, not the tongue. Something that has a port gives tongue relief also. No chain bits. All the pressure from a chain is on the tongue.

You would be shocked how many horses have cut tongues. Make sure to keep up on his dentals. You just might have to play around finding a mouthpiece that is comfortable for him. Have you tried a hackamore?

Rutledge Roper worked well on a horse hubby owned whose tongue had been cut multiple times before we got him.

That Dutton is a nice bit and I prefer the 3 piece over the 2 piece mouthpieces.

Like rodeoveteran said...The rutledge roper mouthpiece works well on a horse with a cut tongue. I prefer the Workman bit over the rutledge.

My mares tongue is almost cut all the way through. I found a chain bit works the best for her. A 3 piece was to much mouth action and a hack didn't have enough Whoa.

You may want to rethink that. Every one (me included in the past) tends to think it a severe bit. As is frequently stated ANY bit can be "too much" in the wrong hands. We put one on a fiery, soft mouth mare that I never dreamed would tolerate it. She hated a broken bite, was most comfortable in a bar or chain. I ended up running her in a Rutledge. The mouthpiece pivots on the shanks and slows down the hands and lessen the severity of the bit, downgrading a "demand" to a "request" so to speak. When you reach the end of the pivot, THEN the severity of the shanks and curb come in to play. The reason it is a good choice for a cut tongue is that the seemingly enormous mouthpiece spreads the pressure on the tongue over a MUCH bigger area.

I am guessing that all of the horses with cut tongues we acquired over the years were tied with the reins of a bitted horse and the horse pulled back, and that a Rutledge Roper would bruise and mash long before it would cut. Those snaffles and 3 piece bits would cut. So which is a better choice? (Not tying a horse by the reins is the better choice!)

My friend's horse has this issue. The trainers she has used have suggested mullen mouths.
At least it wouldn't be moving around pinching any possible bumps and scars.

One of my daughters rodeo buddies uses this on her horse. The horse was kill pound bound and had been really beat up. His tongue was a mess! They tried multiple bits but found the rutledge roper to work the best.

My OTTB has a really bad old cut on his tongue. It's pretty mangled about 3/4 of the way across. He is happiest in a hackamore. At first I was terrified to ride him in the hack because he was always pretty hard to stop but after I put my big girl panties on and gave it a try I found that he actually became somewhat easier to stop with the hack.....I'm thinking because he liked it better he wasn't fighting me as much. He still doesn't stop great and at this point never will but most of the head tossing quit and I can actually get him to collect with the hack.
