| I recently had a friend who lost a horse to founder due to hock injections. the mare was fusing so they had her hocks injected. 4 days later she foundered and tried for 3 months to save her.
I had NEVER heard of this as a "side effect" of injections. Anyone else? |

| This does not happen often but horses can founder after getting injections. It is most common with horses that have a metabolic disorder such as Cushings or IR.
I have a friend who bought a horse that was severely foundered. She ran him in ALL 10 performances in 11 NFR's. (the only horse to do that) He had the very best of care, though. With the treatments available now I really do not understand why nothing worked. |

| Just like I said with all the better treatments today, I don't understand why they lost the horse. Deb bought Brown in 1986. I know treatments have improved since then.
By the way here is a link to an article about Deb Mohon and her horse Brown. Deb was killed in a riding accident in 2003. Brown died in 2007.

| Certain steroids can cause founder, there is a maximum limit for the dose of steroid, if the vet gave too much then yes.
This is why my vet doesn't inject steroids into horses.
Also if the horse was getting dex for something like inflammatory airway disease, and received another steroid in the joint, most likely it would cause founder, this is a big no no |

Some horses when they start dropping there is no stopping them.
I had one founder from a gi bleed, then she got thrush which caused her to drop the coffin bone came through the foot, vet had to cut the dft 3-4 times on both from feet, a year later while still at the vets she sloughed off both front feet.
2 yrs later she is home, tens of thousands in vet bills, I have a hay burner who now is a chronic abscesser.
I honestly wouldn't do it again, but have experienced how horses can die of founder if you are not willing to put in the time/effort/money and have a knowledgable vet |

Once coffin bone rotates n drops that's pretty much it.
I put down my dear Jet Honor daughter this spring that foundered 2 yrs ago.
I too spent hundreds on trying to just maintain her comfort.
My dad was a farrier so I know the ugly side.
The pain is a constant. Some r better than others I know.
Some loose leg control etc.
it's heart breaking to live with.
One day just maybe there will be a quicker med to stop most of the damage.
But there again you'd have to be there when it happened.
I caught my mare when it started n she still rotated to near the sole.
Ripped my heart out.

I put down my dear Jet Honor daughter this spring that foundered 2 yrs ago.

Location: Golden Gulf Coast of Texas | Anything that causes pain can cause founder. That's why a lot of vets tell u to bute for a few days after injections for the pain. |

^^^This! There are great articles on laminitis, and the office hours post on the concepts of inflammation is so informative. I'm loving this site and the opportunity to understand things from a fundamental stand point. Dr. Schell does a great job explaining things where even I can wrap my head around it....even when i'm having a "blonde" day! LOL
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend's horse. That is devastating. I sure wish we could have had the opportunity to get Dr. Schell involved before he was put down. :( |
