Location: Minnesota | Has anyone had any experience with this? I have a 3 year old female red Merle. We have spent 2 nights at the ER vet with 3 days at our normal vet. Protein levels are very low and they cannot seem to get them under control. Does anyone have experience with this??
We have over $1500.00 into this as of now with our vet referring us out to another clinic that wants $4000.00 to treat her. Ouch! We are looking into all of our options to help our girl who is fighting through.

I'm pre-vet (apply next year) with 8+ years veterinary experience, currently working for an ER/CC specialty hospital.
HGE - there's no TRUE cause of it. It just happens.
That's the crappy part.
All you can do is support them with IVF due to them losing all the water in the liquid diarrhea. Sometimes sloughing of the colon happens so we treat aggressively with antibiotics, NPO them for a day or two (no food/water) and in severe cases transfusions are necessary.
There are a few proteins in the blood such as albumin and globulin. Have they already done a plasma transfusion? Cause this can help restore protein levels.
I'm guessing that the $4000 vet is a specialty 24 hour practice like mine. Please, don't hesitate in this. There are specialized doctors, they have more tools at their disposal (most of the time) such as ultrasound machines, specialized doctors and even more medications at their disposal. Plus, 24 hour care without having to transfer your pet to and from which could be adding more stress.

Location: Minnesota | We have done the albumin,she has been on fluids along with a steroid, and 2 antibiotics. They have allowed me to put her back on food- bland diet. I baked her a turkey and have added boiled potatoes. She is currently very alert, eating well, and drinking on her own. The struggle were running into is her protein levels yesterday it was at a 1.5 and today a 1.4 so down just a bit. They just started the steroid yesterday and I have given it twice today so when we re tested it had not been very long with the meds. I wish they would have caught this Sunday night when we brought her to the ER clinic. That night they just gave SQ fluids and told us to monitor her until we brought her in right away Monday morning. That's when they finally tested for pancreatitis, the liver, fecal, ect were not opposed to heading down to the specialist I was just wondering what other success stories there have been. Would you suggest an ultrasound? We have not had one done yet as the office we are at isn't set up to complete that in paisleys case. |

Location: Texas | sounds like with extensive supportive care she should pull through. I don't have much dog experience though. From what I have read, with supportive care it will run its course and they have success with recovering. |

She is still eating and drinking well and we have the ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10 am! She's doing as well as she can and seems to get more and more perky everyday. We still have clear liquid diarrhea at night. It's like she tries to hold it but cannot. We have been getting up every hour to hour and a half at night to let her out, snack, and get water. |

Location: Minnesota | Thank you for the prayers she is still fighting and seems to be turning around!! Now that the diarrhea has stopped we haven't had any poop at all so we're hoping that this passes and she can continue to get better! |
