Β  I have called and have a vet appointment for Thursday. But one of my horses started coughing...kind of random. Worked out last Monday. Wednesday I just happened to notice her cough as I walked by the pasture. Next day my husband says...one of the horses in the north pasture is coughing. I said I think its Shy. Then she coughed several more times next few days. I spoke to the vet mainly to make sure there is nothing going around. They said probably allergies.Tonight went to worknout and she would cough every time she was asked to do morenthan a walk. No nasal discharge...no fever, no swelling neck, face, head. She needs her teeth done, or is due...not in need like a problem. We dont hay, they have grass 24/7, and are fed in feed pans in the corral, not stalls (in this pasture, where she has been for 4 months). Im just wondering, any ideas? I gave her a shot of Dex tonight...in case it is something simple like an allergy to something blooming. I already have an appointment, but he said if anything gets worse I can bring her earlier. She is eating fine and no other symptoms.

Try squirting a couple tablespoons of yellow hotdog mustard in her grain.  That should ease the coughing in the meantime.  It's probably just the dry climate.  Keep us updated!!

We have had the same problem, but ours turned out to be something spread from a show.   We at first thought dry weather, somthing blooming, etc. too.  We did a whole round of uniprim, nothing changed, except the snot went from thick yellow to clear.  It only presented itself at a lope.  So we gave two shots of excede.

Try 30cc of French's mustard for 5 days.  MUST be FRENCH'S mustard, not just any old brand.  Get a big dosing syringe and just squirt it in her mouth.

My gelding has been coughing since the spring. Just when you first started trotting. He would cough once and be done. I figured it was allergies with all the rain we had this year. Two weeks ago his ear swelled up and he had an ear infection. Got that fixed and last week he came up orange/brown gunk coming out his nose and his back legs stocked up. Took him to the vet and he had a respitory infection. Antibiotics and cough meds cleared it up. I rode him Sunday and he was fine. Went to ride today and his legs are stocked up again, but no discharge or coughing. Sigh.

Never heard of that, but do know lung worms can cause a horse to cough.

Transmitted by goats and donkies,as well as horse to horse

For inflammation the French's is great. Or get some high quality essential oils of Tumeric and give one drop on a horse cookie twice a day.

Agree with allergies. Also could be Summer Pasture Acquired COPD if she has developed a heave line. If so, take her off of that pasture and into another one.

What does the mustard do?   Does it clear up the airways?

We've struggled with that this year too. One horse randomly started coughing. We figured out he had hay allergies. Put him on alfalfa cubes and he's 100% better. Hope it

ICC: I have three that once the pasture ran out and they went back onto hay began to cough. I hate the idea of them having to stay on cubes as the long stem forage is needed by their GI system but to me its the lesser of two evils. Did you do a BAL on the horse?
