I wish there were more pony classes at horse shows.. I think IBRA shows should have a pony class . I went to a jackpot show this Saturday night , my pony ran a perfect run and she ran her little heart out but we still didn't place because she is just to short. Is there anyone else who feels ponies should be separated from the horses?

I would like to see a pony class too added. I do think pony barrels is gaining in popularity at the bigger shows.

The bigger shows could offer a pony class with any age rider that way an adult trainer could compete on a pony in training. Any youths on ponies could also enter the youth classes.

When you say pony, what size are you exactly talking about? Are you talking about the "anything under 14.2" definition of a pony, or like Shetland pony sizes?

I'll be honest with you, I don't think "we can't win because we're just too short" is a valid reason to want your own class. Look at Babyflo and Stingray. I don't know their exact size, but they certainly are less than 15-16 hands + which seems to be about the majority of the others.

I heard a trainer explain to someone one time that there is no reason that little horses can't run just as fast, or faster than their bigger counterparts. Big horses have to slow down much more in order to make tight turns, and they make up their time in the straightaways. Ponies or little horses don't have to slow down as much. They can be trained to use their size to their advantage and have a more snake-y style to running than a roll back style bigger horses seem to have.

I agree. I haven't gotten a check at a barrel race since last November. I keep falling in the dreaded 1D/2D cracks. Just the game you gotta play.

On the flip side, I've seen some ponies kick some a$$ and win checks. I don't think you can use size as a reason to create a class in order to increase your odds of winning.

At the fairs around here we have pony classes ( under14.2) my pony always has either the fastest time or darn close. She isn't even 14hh . She runs hard and her turns are great . She is in shape. There is nothing more she can do to make her times faster. She kicks butt at rodeos with tighter patterns, but the IBRA shows with the longer patterns her legs just aren't long enough to cover ground on the straight .

Nationals takes long enough with the 4 classes they run now (between 2 long gos and the short go) that they struggle to get everything in.

I think pony barrels is a nice class at fair type shows but they only have a couple entries in my area.

I guess it's different in PA. Most of us all run 1 horse and 1 pony. So out in sanctioned shows always have ponies separated from horses.
