Looking for any suggestions or experience with something like this. I want to do everything I can to save the eye but the vet says it is not very promising. She still has her 3rd eye lid but that is it. Any special medication or treatment plans? Anything would be great thanks in advance!

Sew what you can shut after removing the eye.

You might want to check in with Blazes Equine Rescue in Jones, Oklahoma. They have a rescue gelding that has a partial, or no eyelid that they took in this year and he's doing well. They might be able to share what their vet's done. You can find them on facebook. Wishing you good luck!

To be brutally honest, if the vet says your chances are slim, BELIEVE them! I had a horse with an eye injury that did not look severe at all and after several weeks and several thousand $$'s, we had to remove the eye. The horse reovered super fast and went right back to running barrels better than ever and is still winning years later. To remove an eye is not the end of the world.

Remove the eye. It will be the easiest on you and your horse as far as cost and recovery. We had a mare lose an eye at 4 months old, granted it was easier for her because she was young and grew into the transition, but they had a gelding at the same hospital that was older and he recovered great. My mare is 6, running barrels, and doing extremely well! Best of luck to you and your horse!

I am ok with they eye being removed and sewn shut but currently there is not enough tissue to sew it shut. Great to here your horse made a great barrel horse even with one eye. I am confident mine will too she has a lot of heart.

Do you have a picture of your horse. I am just curious to see what they look like with one eye. Thanks
