Is there anywhere that sexes horse semen? I found a few articles that said they were working on it but it wasn't currently available, but they were from a few years ago so I don't know whether or not things have changed since that time.

Haven't heard anything. But, that would be great.  Probably a tad expensive?

Have no idea, but I have heard they can also screen semen for 5 panel...  I know it's expensive, don't know where it is done, but they are working on this.  Shoot, soon will be able to choose the color! Takes all the fun out it!!

Do you realize that each sperm carries iits own sex gene? Whichever sperm fertilizes the egg determines the sex of the offspring. That would mean each sperm would have to be checked. Since there are several million sperm in each batch, so to speak, it would take a while. I would think the quality of your semen would be greatly compromised.

Been doing it in cattle industry for years. It's actually fairly simple with them from what I understand. One of the sperm weighs more (I think male?) and so they separate the entire batch at one time. Nothing individually.

For the cattle industry there is a sexing place in Navasota TX. We hauled the special "open water pellets" they make for the heifers to ship them to Russia. They load 1200 heifers in Galveston, that are all bred with heifers, on a ship that looks like a cruise ship. It has big open paneled areas with big fans to keep the odors down. We did this for 3 ships leaving Galveston, I found it super interesting, but sad. Russia wants to be self sufficient in there own beef industry, so they don't have to buy from the US anymore... Kinda shooting ourself in the foot, I think...

Yes especially since we keep IMPORTING outside beef. OUR country is more than self sufficient if we do it right.

It's been done with horses for years.  XY, Inc. of Fort Collins was who started it in 1996...CSU picked it up via that company.   The founder of XY, Inc. sold off his shares a few years ago, the company that owns it now is in Navasota but to my knowledge are only working on cattle.  Mr. Jacobson was also emplying his technology with his Morgan show horses when he had XY in FoCo. He would rescue the mares people would donate to CSU when they (CSU) were finished with them.  He would do semen sexing with those mares at XY's barn in FoCo and then sell the foals.  It was a great program when he had it.

Actually, it can be done in a fairly quick manner.  Sex associated proteins are expressed in the cell membrane which allow each X or Y carrying cell to be "labeled".  Monoclonal antibodies (the labels) are then incubated for a short time with the sperm, the antibodies attach, and the sperm is then run through a flow cytometry system which then sorts the sample according to the "label".  Start to finish is a couple hours.

The labels are benign and cause no harm to the system.

This technology is used commonly in molecular biology labs among others.
