Expert Posts: 4625 Location: Desert Land	Yes, I have had a couple broodmares that were cribbers. None of their babies ever "learned" to crib or any of my other horses for that matter. I have had several cribbers that I bought knowing they were cribbers and none of my horses that were non-cribbers ever picked up cribbing. And every single one of my horses that has cribbed had been confirmed to have gastric ulcers. Treat the ulcers, the cribbing stops. Only 1 of the cribbers I have had never stopped completely and that was because she was so sensitive and just about anything would give her ulcers - new horse in the yard, weather change, different cutting of hay, being up in a stall to foal out, weaning her baby, etc. That mare was fractious. But to date every single one of her babies turned out to be a 1D horse, so she was worth dealing with, just had to keep a close eye on her and break out the ulcer guard as needed.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 448 Location: lone star state	Cribbers can be prone to colic. Especially older broodmares and the heavier in foal the higher the risk. So should you choose to purchase or already have one be very diligent in watching for signs of colic.

Veteran Posts: 211 Location: Vinton, La.	I have a coming 18 year old broodmare that has been a cribber since she was a long yearling. (I raised her) None of her babies have ever cribbed. She is high strung and started cribbing at the track. Have tried just about everything there is to cure/prevent/whatever. Nothing works. I just let her crib and repair her destruction.

boon Posts: 4	I just recently bought a horse who has cribbed for as long as the previous owner has known/owned him. I've treated my other gelding for ulcers because he showed certain signs. This new horse doesn't show any signs up of ulcers, but in your post you said any cribber you have owned was confirmed to have ulcers... How did you treat them or were there other signs of ulcers or just the fact that they cribbed? Thank you!

Sock Snob Posts: 3021	Ulcers. Treat. I have a retired 1-d mare with a two year old and a weany no cribbers. Infact this mare did not crib until she was 5 she is close to 20 she cribbed before anyone knew ulcers.
