Location: MO | I am thinking of trying a compounded pentosan. Who has used this and how well has it worked for your horse's specific problems? Exactly what problems was your horse having that it alleviated/did not alleviate? Has anyone here compared it with the use of the original Pentosan? If so, could you tell a difference in it's efficiency? How long did it take to see a difference, if any? I have used some compounded products before with a lot of success, but haven't tried this yet, so curious... |

Location: Midwest | I buy mine from my vet. It's compounded at Wedgewood. There is no FDA approved version of Pentosan, so technically they are all generic. If you are talking about the original company, I have never tried their product because it is more expensive.
The Wedgewood version has always worked fine for me. My horse is 18 and has mild arthritis in the lower hock joint. He's a pansy and definitely shows me when he's in pain. I was injecting him every three months and now I only have to inject him if I slack on giving the Pentosan. I dose him once a week when running, every other week when I'm not showing (even if he's not being ridden).
I notice a mild difference within a few days and full efficacy can be seen after the loading dose is complete. It won't work for every horse but it has done wonders for mine.
Side note- it is a mild anti-coagulent, so I don't run him within 72 hrs of giving the product. I believe the anti-coagulent effects are supposed to be out of their system within 24 hours. |

Location: Central Texas | I love Pentosan and have seen a major difference in both my horses. They came to me pretty well used and so have just the normal issues in regards to a well used horse. I give a loading dose of 4 shots 7 days apart every 6 months, then a shot no closer than 48 hours before a race because of it's anti coagulant ability. Currently, I am a weekend warrior so they may get 2 or 3 shots outside the loading dose a month. If they aren't running I don't give a shot. I see results pretty quickly. |

Location: North Dakota | Pentosan is good stuff, my vet calls in a perscription to Wedgewood pharmacy. If you search on here with the subject as Pentosan there is A LOT of threads going over the topic. If you have a horse with known arthritis it will help! |

| I use the gold version from horse prerace. Love it. But I am now following the advice of Dr. Schell at Curost and its very possible that with the EQ pure formula he makes I will not need joint injections or injectables again. Really looking forward to the results. But as of now, absolutely, the pentosan gold works wonders for my horse with coffin joint and hock issues. |

Location: TN | Love Love Love Pentosan Can't say enough about the positive results I have seen with my band of mares. I have used compounded Pentosan from 3 different sources DVM Ford who's was compounded in Arkansas and DVM Hicks from Wedgewood. a local DVM gave me a RX from Road Runner in arizona but i hate to ship that far a way in the Summer
Where does the "original" come from?
was going to order some from Horse pre race for $109 but the price jumped $40 in one day. hoping it will jump back down. In the mean time still getting it from a DVM. |
