| I have a 16hand, 1300lbs paint mare who likes small pens. I prefer big pens though, because more time to work with. Her best placings are in a high 14/low 15 second fast time pen. |

| Yep. My gelding is 16H+ (never sticked him, but I'm 5'6 and can't see over his withers)
He does his best work in small pens. 1D/2D (1D on real good days, lol). Runs 3D/4D in large pens. He's very turny but doesn't have quick foot speed. So while the others are bursting to 2nd, he's ready to turn it and doesn't have to whoa down or miss it completely. |

Location: Saskatchewan | I cant wait to try my mare in some smaller pens... We've only ran on pretty big patterns, so I'm very curious! This thread piques my interest lolI love knowing that big horses out there can handle some small patterns and do well!This is my mare, I've never sticked her, but she's gotta be around the 16hh mark... I'm 5'7"...

| Caughtyawl had a 16 hand horse that didn't care what size the pen was. You could set up a pattern in your bedroom and he could beat everyone. Caughtyawl is about 5 feet tall and had to have a step ladder to get on him. |

| My 16.1 big guy does well in small pens, he's a definate free runner, and rates better in small pens. He doesn't have time to get to that insane speed between each barrel. And I'm ashamed to say in big pens he gets too full of himself and has very little rate. |

My mare would get that way in bigger pens too, if she was given too much space to run, she would usually forget to rate for 3rd and blow it. She isn't the fastest horse in the pen, but she can get it done if we work together and not against each other. |

Location: Arkansas | The horse in my avatar is 16 hands, and he would whoop butt on a 12-14 second pattern. He was extremely athletic, and I think he really learned how to handle himself in small places in the feedlots. He would win on 19 second patterns too though. Didn't matter where the first was, you hammered him to it and he inhaled it. What I wouldn't give for another just like him... |

| My gelding is 16'2 and can eat up a small pattern. He doesn't know he's that big :) 1D consistently. Big pens can be tricky for him especially if he's blind to first. I only let him cruise 3/4 to first and then we haul a$$ to 2nd and 3rd. He is 1/2 d. Standard pattern are low 17s bc he's so long strided and fast he can cover some real estate coming home. |

| These are inspiring! Thanks!! I just got my big guy back. He was started on barrels before and I traded him for a finnished horse. He has landed back in my lap and I am extremely excited to finnish him! |

| Here is a pic! When I ride by the barrel normally, my foot just barely brushes the top of the barrel.

Location: PNW | The horse in my avatar sticks EXACTLY at 16.3 and he has a MONSTROUS stride that covers a lot of ground VERY fast.
As long as MY BRAIN is quick enough to keep up with him, he does great in small pens. He's really athletic and catty, and doesn't look like he should be able to move the way he does. |
