I'm 49 and I've had horses my whole life, but I've never had a weanling (youngest I've ever bought was 2). I'm trying to buy one now, and so excited! She will be turned out on 8 acres with my retired 19 yr old.

I would love some weanling 101 advice, comments, etc...

Make sure you feed her well and balance her nutrition so she doesn't have growing or joint issues (thinking especially epiphysitis). I would give her enough handling that she's safe to be around but otherwise let her be a horse. I would also feed her by herself so her nutrition is assured.

We feed Ultium Growth. They need more protein and especially a balanced mineral supplement to help. I also like progressive nutrition's feeds.

I fed Ultium Growth yrs ago to my show horse and loved how he looked on it. At the time it was hard to find in my area. None of the other Purina dealers would stock it. But now it is available and I am going to put my 4 weanlings on it. I give THE Muscle Mass with immune, ulcer prevent, added minerals as the blends. That gives them the vitamins and minerals, amino acids etc that they need.

There are 765488789 ways a weanling can hurt/mame/injur/kill himself before reaching that magical age of 2. Wrap in bubble wrap & pray a lot. Have fun & do lots of handling &  ground work. (Not lunging)
