| Hey so I posted a while back about not having the confidence to start my now 3 coming 4yo filly. Well after watching a beautiful day like today go by without doing a darn thing with her, I have decided I will start this week or I will sell her. This is BS. I wont let her go to waste. SO that being said to try and spark my interest, I want to get some colt starting DVDs. I am thinking Clinton Anderson, as he is my go-to guy BUT this mare is much different than I have ever handled or ever seen him work with, so I almost want to find a video of someone working with a horse like her.
She is one where she will walk up to me, or let me walk up to her but when I reach out to touch her, she is scared. Sometimes jumps, sometimes jumps and runs off. Once I touch her, she relaxes and is just fine. I can desensitize the air around her once she is caught but how to I get her over that being loose? Just do it while she's caught and eventually she'll get over it?
Anywho, please post your favorite colt starting (from the ground) DVDs. I am using giddyupflix . com. They let you rent DVDs for as long as you need them for cheap :)
Thanks! ! | |

Location: Got Lobsta? | I have a hard time understanding really in depth training. Some dvd's lost me in the first 20 minutes. I decided to purchase yet another colt training dvd set to add to my collection. Not expecting much I watched the Phil Haugen Colt starting. Its a 3 dvd set and he does everything basically in a day. I could follow it easily and its like he's speaking to you. He uses a colt he just pulled out of the pasture. I've been following the dvd's for 3 months - I couldn't do that in a day and the results are amazing!!! I'm already sitting on her and walking her around. PLUS You can call him and he will help you out if you get into a snag! I'm NO trainer and its been exciting seeing the results.

Putting a halter on her every day, even if it's just to tie her up to feed her, will get her over this quickly.
All of my yearlings come in like this, as long as I catch them regularly they are fine, if I let a month go by without messing with them they act just like you described your mare.

| Thanks yall! I think I misrepresented her a little. I can catch her relatively easily. She's jumpy when I'm not actually trying to catch her lol. I can walk right up to her with a halter, rub her between the eyes and boom, she's caught. But if I walk up with or without a halter and try to pet her nose or try to pet her neck she gets scared. Once caught, I can stick my fingers in her ears if I want to lol. It's just a weird deal.
Thank you for everyone's input. All is very welcome.
So on giddyupflix I have set to get CAs colt starting and the fundamentals but all are currently rented (of course lol) so I got Smokie Brannaman's colt dvd series. It's an uncut series of start to first ride outside on a 5yo mustang.
