someone refresh my memory about oats please. For horses that need a diet with low NSC percentages are oats suitable or are they high in NSC's? If they are suitable which type of oats is best? When I lived in Ohio I fed Southern States Perfomance pelleted feed and I loved it. When I moved to Indiana it isnt avaiable anywhere in the state. I have tried several feeds but nothing that I found that my horses really perfoprmed as well on as the Southern States.

Β  They have a fairly high NSC but it is lower than barley and corn and also digested better. So for a horse with legitimate medical issues that prevent them from eating starch, I would avoid it or at least consult a vet. If you're like me and just don't like your horses to get excess starch, it's great in small quantities. I only feed 2-4 lbs a day usually and love em.

winwillows - 2015-09-28 10:19 PM It is much easier now at any TSC in the US. All distribution centers for Tractor Supply now have it in stock.
WHAAAT?!??!?! In all stores - I'm giving it the test today!
They might not stock it, but when you give the manager the SKU they can order it for you. That's what I do. Β
Yes, now available at any TSC in the US by giving them the item number 1054391 and telling them that it is now a "worksheet item" that is in stock today at every TSC distribution center.
It worked!!!! I just got off the phone with my local TS and I got the bags at $29.99!!! I just paid $46.00 on Saturday for 3 bags at a local store. I can't be more happier right now!!!Β

Renew Gold used to have a promotion that allowed you to send in UPC codes for 10 bags and you could get a bag free. Β I don't know if they still do that or not?Β

I'm going to try my local TSC I paid $34.95 at the feed store for my renew gold

While we are happy that Tractor Supply is making Renew Gold available to all store locations, I am still a big fan of the independent feed store. They may not have the buying power to order by the ton, or enjoy other discounts, but most provide better service and knowledge to the horse owners in their town. We are trying to even the playing field to allow those independent stores to price Renew Gold close to the Tractor Supply price. We can't legally tell them what price to put on products that they sell. In most cases, small independent feed stores will be several dollars per bag more. If this is the case, a lot of customers will go there for their Renew Gold and whatever else they need. I think that is a good thing. Since Renew Gold is fed a such a low amount the difference per day that two or three dollars per bags makes is less than the variation in the amount of hay that you feed by the end of the month. We continue to work to support the independent feed stores.

I actually agree with you on that. After thinking about it and not wanting to have to deal with asking tsc to carry it I'm just sticking with my hometown small feed store they always ALWAYS have plenty of renew gold in stock. I'm only feeding 3 right now and they are all on half pound a day because they aren't even being used right now.

I started out getting my RG locally but it quickly went from $34.99 a bag to 43.95 a bag. Now I'm trying to get it at my TSC but they are having a hard time getting it from their distribution center. They checked today and said the DC had 300 bags but 400 ordered. While I love the feed Im sick of stressing about whether or not I can get it when I run out! I have been looking at other options for this reason.

Free choice grass, bermuda round bale free choice, alfalfa Pellets for Mare, timothy or orchard grass soaked cubes or dry pellets for Gelding. Never had another problem with colic or ulcers Knock on Wood. Couldn't have gotten luckier when I stumbled upon a nutrition post on this forum.  I loved what Renew Gold was doing but had to switch to alfalfa pellets, oats and rice bran and THE MM as a supplement. It's been two weeks and so far so good. This is a horse that gets hotter than a $2 pistol on any processed feeds like Podium, Step 8 and I've tried one of Nutrena's products and even beet pulp. She's calm, willing to go to work and doesn't put up a fuss.

Having Renew Gold available at all TSC stores along with more independent feed stores every day will solve the issue of reliable supply in a lot of places. We have the capacity to make as much as our customers want. All distributors are cautious about their inventory, but are learning that the demand is there now that the price is getting better across the U.S. The only reason for the Texas Tractor Supply DC to have more orders than RG in stock is simply that they did not order enough. I think that will soon change.

I refuse to pay $43.95 for Renew Gold from our local feed store when I can get it at TSC for $29.95. I'm not a fan of TSC but that is a huge difference and not just a few dollars.

Whoa, now that is a big price different, I dont blame you at all, I was going to order some Rapid Flex from Valley Vet and some one told me that they saw it at Wal Mart so went to go see for myself and sure enought Wal Mart had it, it was less at Wal Mart Payed 33.94 and Valley Vet was going to be 42.95 plus shipping I think shipping was going to be 6 to 8 dollars so bought a few from Wal Mart, It dont hurt to save momey when you can.

tin can - 2015-09-28 5:46 AM I feed triple crown complete flax and platinum performance salt block and free joice equilix, does the poster who recommended not feeding a commercial feed have a good recipe she could share? The local mills here mix for cattle and it shows cob in it or stalks and i don't know how to get the right mineral ratio and i don't think the mill owner understand s horse s enough to either, i worry i am going overboard with what I'm doing but he looks great
We have fed a locally mixed feed for YEARS. I have always felt secure that they were taking necessary precautions when mixing the horse feed. Nobody has ever had any issues, and it's a great mix that a ton of people around here feed.

WELL, they just got bought out by another mill in the same area, with many of the dairy operations shutting down, it no longer makes sense to have 2 large mills in the same small town. We are having to swap feeds bc the other mill has known cases of horses getting sick and/or dying from cattle meds. A reliable source told me they don't even attempt to be safe about it. I have about half a barrel of feed left, and we are going to something else. Not entirely sure what yet. I don't want Nutrena, as good as my guy looked in Safe Choice, I'm now better educated. Not to mention I got 2 bags of molded feed that we're not old at all.

A lot of the feeds you guys are feeding aren't as readily available around here, and I also have a lot of mouths to feed. So looking for something affordable but SAFE, and decent quality.

Purina mills are all safe if I remember correctly, right?

Or if someone has a breakdown of cost for Renew Gold and alfalfa cubes, I will have to convince hubby that even though it's pricey, it could be cost effective in the long run.

The problem I was having with Safe Choice was inconsitant bags of feed. One bag would be "normal" and the next the feed would be like little bitty pellets and dusty. I stopped feeding it and started feeding Purina's Enrich to my easy keepers and a 50/50 mix of Strategy and Ultium to my colt that is in regular work.

I tried RG as the only pelleted feed plus grass hay, but it just didn't work for mine, so I went down to half a pound of the RG with oats, alfalfa pellets, and Progressive Nutrition Grass balancer (which i will be switching off of shortly). Fingers crossed I will be getting the Omnis cubes in my area and will use those with the RG, which is good for mixing supplements in as well as a great feed.

Just RG with grass hay for my healthy horses. In the summer one of my horses gets 1 flake of alfalfa because of ulcer issues. For my senior horses, they get one extra small scoop of rice bran.
