Location: Louisiana | I have been looking into feeding oats for a little while now. I asked my mom if we've ever fed oats, back when I was young I just dumped the buckets lol. But I know we fed a lot of different feeds. She said YES, we fed hulless oats for a while and they were amazing. But they had a hard time getting them and then couldn't get them at all. So we swapped back to a commercial mix. She said she absolutely loved them. In all of my BHW research I see talk about whole, crimped, and steam rolled, but not HULLESS. So, where can I find them?! thanks! |

something to remember ... Whole oats have the outer shell, or hull, completely intact and are the least processed of all the oat varieties. While the hull provides no nutritional value, it does offer additional fiber to aid digestion. Hulls also protect the inside of the oat, called the groat, from mold and insects. Intact hulls increase the time oats can be stored. Most horses find whole oats palatable, and whole oats are easy to mix with additional ingredients to create a more nutritionally complete feed.

| There has been a couple of fads on growing hulless oats over the years but the commercial price for them did not pay a farmer enough to keep growing them since they produce less per acre than ordinary oats ...

I stopped buying ADM horse feeds when they removed groats from their ingredients .. and went to using waste products from human food processing and ethanol waste products like all of the milling companies do.
Whole oats is your best feed due to extra fiber, makes horse chew his food and produce saliva for digestion, hull has enzymes that affects a horses overall condition and if you add a block of alfalfa hay per day with your oat feed ... you will have the most natural and beneficial feed you can buy to keep all of your horses in the best shape possible.
Whole oats also store better for a longer time and has less chance for toxicity vs rolled or crimped oats..... any time oxygen is introduced to a natural grain the rotting process begins.

If you need a fatter horse ... add a half pound of rolled or chopped corn to his oat and alfalfa feeding program and I also throw a handful of ADM GroStrong minerals in their feed every other day ... fron new borns eating with mama to older horses with teeth problems they all do well on this simple but all natural feeding program ........... skinny horses are usually caused from a poor feeding and worming program ...

Ok that link was of oats with the hulls removed. I'm talking about natural hulless oats. Has anyone fed those? |

Location: Florida.. | Whole is the most nutritional.. the more Processed the less they are.. they loss nutrients. Most horses can digest them. Id stay away from whole or cracked corn but thats my opinion.if you have srs rolled is softer and easier to digest but remember not as full of nutrients.. |

The ones I'm talking about are grown hulless. They aren't processed at all. I'm not having much luck finding info online, besides the link Barrelhorseusa shared. |

Yep it's looking like they only exist online lol.
Mama said they fed them for a while and loved them. Then they got impossible to come by. They were out of Canada back then. |
