Location: SE Louisiana | We built the ultimate dog pen. Dog wire on all four sides and ON TOP!! My girl was only about 100 pounds but the first time she was locked in there and a thunder-storm came along.... She ripped a hole through the wire and was GONE for three days. I was worried sick!!! |

The type of fence people use and have found to work. I have been pushing for a fence since February when all my dogs were still alive, but have still not gotten one. Now, I would like opinions on the type of fence people recommend so that I can get one.

Location: Oregon | I have the non climb horse fence around the perimeter of my my place and three rail along the roads, driveway and around the house. Although I live on a dead end, a family moved in past me that are HORRIBLE neighbors and fly by my house so what used to be just a long driveway for the other two families that live on this road has become a 'real' road. We attached the welded wire that looks just like the non climb on the three rail because it looks nice (matches the more expensive non climb) and was WAY WAY cheaper. Now the entire property is completely fenced - nothing can get in, nothing can get out. Love it and my animals are safe now from the road. |

Location: MD | my boyfriend swears by the invisible fence. His lab (that died last year) was NUTS for anything chaseable. She was also a little dramatic every time she got near it she looked like a reining horse! Of course as she became accustomed to it you turned it off and she wouldn't stray much past it, he left up those wooden sticks to give her a visual. They lived on a very busy street with lots of kids, people, cars, and woodland creatures giving her plenty of opportunity, but she figured it out fast!
We don't use it here because we are about 1/2 mile off the road and my dog doesn't wander much |

Location: Never in one place long | We live on a busy road also and people drive very fast, most of our 10 acres is fenced but on part of one side and the front (road side). We put in an underground fence and taught the dogs they can't cross it. It works amazing and dogs won't go near the road... the only problem I have is i get a new foster dog from the animal shelter every week or so then have to spend a lot of time training them on it before I can let them loose.... So this fall, we're putting up a physical fence in the places we don't have one AND leaving the underground fence on so it's like a double fence! If they get close to the physical fence to try and dig or whatever, they'd get shocked so will stay well away from it. I figure it'll be a pretty safe fence and we can even leave our dogs loose in it during the day also. |

if your out of city get the wire fence , if your in neighborhood get chainlink or privacy.. we as owners have to do this to protect our animals.. we cant blame anyone (drivers, cars , people) if we arent being responsible ourselves.
I do not blame anyone but myself for what has happened, trust me this is eating me alive that I have not gotten a fence sooner. But what I would really appreciate is the type and kind of fences people recommend. I understand everyone is very quick to judge on why my dogs have not been in a fence sooner, and like I said I take for responsibility for the loss of life, as it is not fair to them that my lack of effort resorts in their death. Any recommendations on fence models and what works great would be kindly appreciated.
I understand why you haven't gotten a fence yet... I've been begging my husband to help me get one up for years! he just now agreed to it! We have an underground that works well but not for new dogs constantly coming in. Luckily, ours dogs have been safe this far and I've fostered about 50 Foster dogs and have been able to keep them all safe but it sure does make me nervous. |

Location: Texas | 6ft picket fence all the way around, if they try to get out of that... hot wire. We had 2 acres fenced as a back yard. I have a Doberman and a Boxer that everyone thinks is a pit because he is brindle? If they wandered up to someone's house I couldn't say that they wouldn't have gotten shot just because of how they look alone. Although the Boxer never roams and is the type that will sit at the door waiting for me if I go inside without him. I could take him to anyone's house and leave him outside and he would sit at the door waiting. The Doberman, ha not a chance she would stick around. She would be chasing birds, cats, squirrels... imaginary things lol.
We had obnoxious neighbor kids. My dogs were going nuts one day so I went out to see what was going on. These kids were in my front yard, throwing sticks and rocks at my dogs in the back yard. They were trying to poke them with sticks through the chainlink too. The oldest of these kids was probably 9 and the youngest was a toddler. Where their parents were I had no clue. So I told them to get their butts off my property and that the Doberman could jump the fence if she wanted to so they better thank their lucky stars they hadn't made her that mad yet. I wasn't kidding. It was like a 4ft fence and she had cleared it a few times. They had my dogs so mad they were chewing on the fence and fighting each other. I will never have another fence that isn't solid. Even though the kids were at fault, if they had gotten bit it would have been my dogs that paid the price.

Location: Wisconsin | We installed SportDog Underground fence. We have had it probably 5 years now with no problems. We have bird dogs and they will not cross it, even if chasing a squirrel they stop. If you make sure and due the training the manual explains they are worth every penny. I think it cost us $200 at Gander Mountain, and we bought extra wire, and fenced about 4 acres. Wouldn't own another property without it installed. |

My two fat bassets and the corgi only have a 4' ruff cut lumber slab fence and it's perfect for them.

Not to get off track lol but your Dobe sounds like mine. I've had 2 and the first was just a gem. Never ran off. She would follow me to the end of the drive and I would say "stay" she would lay down and I would go on a trail ride. Come back an hour later she was still there. My current one is a goof. Each morning you let her out she runs across the yard full tilt barking her head off at absolutely NOTHING!! Oh and she thinks she is a hunting dog too. Which she stinks at!! |
