I bought a horse about a week ago. I have papers in hand, and a transfer. I haven't made an attempt to register it in my name. The horse is 13, and has traded hands three times that I know of, and never been transferred. People just keep passing along the papers, and the transfer. I cant remember the date on the transfer, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes all the way back to when the thing was a yearling-----------Worth pursuing?

I normally would just wad them up, and throw them way. the thing is 13, and a gelding. About all your getting is proof of age. I do have "some' interest in seeing this horse papered in my name. For a stupid reason I know. i always wanted a horse bred this way, and now I have it.

If the transfer is signed by the last recorded owner, send it in.

I say this too.
We did it with one just one owner removed, and no issues- ever.

Most people sign an open transfer because there used to be a time limit that you had to transfer. I don't think that is true any more. You need to transfer the horse. Forget all the people who owned him and just transfer him to your name. AQHA will want to charge you for each transfer.

Please don't just throw the papers away. I've done transfers several times that were signed years prior, by numerous owners ago. I just put the date I purchased the horse and send them in. Never had a problem with it. If you want every previous owner listed you will need a signed transfer from each one and will have to pay the $15 per owner.

Two of my horses now list that I am only the second owner after the breeder. When in fact each horse had owners in between that never bothered to transfer into their names.

If you don't want to mess with transferring, please at least keep that signed transfer paper with the registration papers just in case you ever do want to sell him.

I believe Aqha has a special on now pay for the current transfer, and get all the previous owners documented and transferred for free.

This is the part I am not sure of, if you have to track down each previous owner and get their signature.

Personally I would write my name in on the transfer and send it in. I wouldn't worry about the date of sale if it is already filled in. If it isn't filled in, I would put the accurate sale date

I also don't understand why people don't transfer horses after they buy them. Even if it is "just" a gelding, a lot of people out there want to know where the horse has been.
And it is not like it will break the bank. If you can afford a horse, those $15 should not be a problem.
Just sign the papers with the date  you bought it, and send them in.

It's 20 now. 40 for membership as well.
Still, I agree that in the grand scheme of things, 60 bucks is nothing.

I had a similar situation to this. I called AQHA and they wanted me to get all the information from all the previous owners who didn't transfer so it would be on the horses record. I didn't know any of them, what a nightmare. Be careful how much you say to the AQHA, you might have a lot of work . . .

Just sign the papers with the dateΒ  you bought it, and sendΒ them in.

When I look at a horse to buy, if the paperwork is not in order, I move on to the next. When I do buy one I send the papers in immediately and usually get them back in the return mail. Same thing with registering babies, I register them immediately. Never a problem. I don't buy horses in a sale but if the horse came with no papers, I would know that before I purchased. When you can buy NICE young horses with papers for super cheap I don't know why you would waste your time trying to track down papers on a horse.

It doesn't matter what the date is on the transfer, it is still good. If it is open, just fill your info in.

^^  This.  AQHA doesn't know where the horse has been the last few years so just fill out the transfer and send it off.

Absolutely if it's open then fill in your information and send it in. We have done this many times.
If it's not, then the buyer on the transfer form is the only person you need to track down, and get another transfer form from them to you. Don't worry about the other owners in between. Or, you could even find that seller on the transfer form and get them to sign another one with you as the buyer and skip that owner too.
Don't get discouraged and throw them away! It won't be too difficult:)
