I have a 3 year old OTTQH mare, she should grow a little more and her work load will get heavier during the winter in hopes of futurity-ing her in the spring. She is currently on free choice 2nd/3rd cut hay with a decent amount of alfalfa in it during the day and half a flake of a large bale at night in her stall. I am looking to switch her off processed feeds. She will still have salt and mineral blocks in her stall at night, apple cider vinegar and salt top dressed.

I would like to switch her to triple cleaned crimped oats(or is whole better?) split between two feedings. I just fear it will make her hot. I will also have her on milled flax. Do I need to add alfalfa pellets or rice bran?? She is a VERY picky eater.

I am located in Canada so cant get Omni cubes or I would...

I will also have her on Formula 707 mineral, Omega Alpha Biotic 8 and Coco Soya oil till it runs out.

Will this suffice? I currently have her on Tribute Kalm n Ez but like the idea of no processed feed. She is healthy as of yet. Thanks all!!!

In my experience, oats do not make horses hot.  I feed a COB mix and feed 6 lbs a day to a hard keeper and 3 pounds a day to my other mare who is in foal.  I would feed some ricebran with it just to help balance the cal:phos ratio.  Also feed a good free choice mineral becasue oats do not provide enough vitamins and minerals.

The more processed the Oats the less Nutritional.. just something to remember so in my opinion whole is better..

Never had a horse get hot on oats.

Had horses get hot being stalled, nothing to do with feed, but confinement

All of mine haven't been any hotter on oats than they have been on prefix feeds with beet pulp. I've got an OTTB that I'm working on getting weight on and he'd been on a low starch senior feed and was hot as could be. I put him on Total Equine and alfalfa cubes, and three cups of rice/flax (2x a day), remission (for magnesium, lysine) and he's calmed quite a bit. I added a half scoop of triple cleaned oats/barley a week ago and his energy levels are the same. I will say that I think when you feed high fat, it definitely levels them out.

I'm making he big transition/leap from processed pellet (purina equine active senior) to mixing my own rations. In my head I rationalize it as instead of feeding a carrot cooked to mush with a sprinkle of brown sugar I'm just giving the raw carrot.

My original feed program was 8 lbs of equine active senior, forco, free choice good prairie hay , redmonds

What I'm trying.. Haven't completely set on amounts yet but something close to this

4-5 lbs of alfalfa pellets, 1-2 lbs oats, 1 lb renew gold, 1 cup whole flax, forco, redmonds, free choice good prairie hay.

So if I fed whole oats and ground flax, would I have to add a rice bran(pellets or oil) AND alfalfa pellets?
