The racehorse farm I manage will not be breeding next year and we have 7 nice race bred mares that will be open, was wondering if there is a market for this? They are all good, easy to handle mommas. Big bones and good feet.

Leasing is usually a bad idea. If they are not breeding them, why not sell? To me it never made sense to keep mares open. Costs as much to feed an open one as one bred and at least you have some return the next yr.

He's not ready to sell them. His wife died this year and these were her special mares.

I've seen a lot of mare on breeding leases. I think as long as there is a solid contract in place that is signed by both parties.....

There's a group on Facebook, broodmares for sale or lease. I wish I had leased mine instead of selling her.

Have a solid contract but there is a market for this.  I leased mine out because I did not want to sell her - AQHA has a form for this as well.  My mare is now living out her days and I am glad I retained ownership.
