| My mare has a dry yellowish substance around her hoohaw. None of my other mares have this problem. Does anyone know what it may be or what causes it? |

| I would be interested to know also. My mare does the same thing during her heat cycle. I just assumed it was due to that. |

| Crusty? Sounds like a bladder infection. SMZ's for this. You may want to have mare caslicked. |

| She had been bred, several years ago though. She has done this for yrs and my mom or anyone else I talk to about it, seem not to worried. I would think if it was a infection, she would have gotten really sick by now. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and just came out of heat. Idk I think I may call the vet just to be sure. Plus I'm very interested to know exactly what it is. |

She had been bred, several years ago though. She has done this for yrs and my mom or anyone else I talk to about it, seem not to worried. I would think if it was a infection, she would have gotten really sick by now. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and just came out of heat. Idk I think I may call the vet just to be sure. Plus I'm very interested to know exactly what it is.
Just because she isn't outwardly sick, doesn't mean she isn't "sick". Alot of time an infection like that can go un noticed and the mare can have flare ups. I would have her cultured. SMZ's and probiotics will do wonders for her. Also depression, sluggishness, dull coat ect can all be signs of an infection as well. |

Okay thanks. I will call the vet and get her cultured. No depression or anything like that. Definetly want to figure out what is going on. Thank you! |

| Bladder infections are not uncommon in mares. I described the situation to my vet and he said bladder infection without looking at her. He did say not to stop the SMZ's until I had given it to her for ten days. You can take her and get her cultured if you want.
This is common in mares because they are often tilted. As I said, you may want to have her caslicked. If she has foaled , more of a chance she is tilted. |
