Sore jaw from teething on a colt?
Expert
Posts: 5293
My colt actually turned 4 in March. About a year ago when he was 3 he got an extremely painful jaw on the left side. I took him to the vet and she diagnosed him as sore from losing his baby teeth/ caps. He was on previcox few days and he was fine. This morning, same symptoms. Called the vet and she said same thing, and this should be his last set coming in. My question, has anyone ever experienced this with their colt? Thanks! I don't remember this happening before. His teeth were floated professionally last May and were pretty good shape. Thanks.

It happens often but most people ignore it and blame it on stupid colt stuff. The problem happens when the adult tooth is trying to emerge and the baby tooth is retained. This is the reason why young horses should be checked more often and when something like this happens an equine dentist should see if the baby tooth is ready to come out. Pulling a baby tooth too early isn't a good thing either. Does your colt have a knot or knots on his jaw line?
Just like with human babies...teething can be easy for some and really hard for others.

My equine dentist was here a couple of weeks ago.
(At my trainer's
). I needed to have my two year old's wolf teeth taken out so I told her to check my three year old while she was there. This was the SECOND time the three year old has been floated this year. She did remove a couple of caps but said there were several that would need to come out in a few months. It is extremely important to at least have young horses checked a couple of times a year. I can't stress how important this is. I read an article in the 1970's about the importance of floating teeth. I have been having mine floated since then. People thought I was crazy. I had to have the vet to it back then. My suggestion is to have an equine dentist look at the horse Γ nd have the recommend when the horse needs to be checked again.

Not really one lump. General swelling at the bottom of the jaw line. But when you palpate it there really is just one specific very sore area. Vet said to give previcox and see how it progresses.

The lumps are caused because the perm is trying to come in and the baby tooth is still sitting strong in the gum line. The perm is growing so it's getting pushed into the jaw line. Once the baby tooth gets loosened the perm will start to push it out. Most caps are lost without any problems. I agree with the Previcox to make him more comfortable. Pay attention to the smell of his mouth. If it starts to smell that is usually caused from a retained baby tooth
(cap
). Food will get caught under the cap and when it gets loose will also cause a lot of pain as the sharp edges of the cap will rock back and forth into the gum line. Most horses will actually work their tongue back and forth to get rid of a cap but if a cap is sitting to the outside of the jaw they usually need to be removed.

Just got back from the vet. As it turns out we found a small puncture wound and he will be on antibiotics and previcox for 5 days.

Yea I didn't want to go in on a Saturday but my vet said that he would be sore with a tooth coming in but not as sore as he was. I found a very small little scab so she said it would be best to take a look and stop it now rather than a full blown abcess later. So 100.00 later that's where we are. Lol

Trust me...that $100.00 is a lot cheaper then what a full blown abcess would have been. LOL
