tell me your experiences...and what is the normal money exchange? How does the trainer make $ off the deal?

I'm highly considering sending my filly to be sold through my trainer because we do not get along. I do not want to sell her but we do not get along and its not fair to either one of us. She is a very nice bred and built filly, but not far enough along IMO to ask a whole lot for her.

I had a hard time finding someone to work with my horse. The people who were a good match didn't have the time to market him like I wanted. So now I'm selling myself.

Most deals were 10% comission + board, training/entryfee's

I think she's worth a good chunk, but isn't very far along training wise and is 3yo. No one wants a 3yo with 10 rides.... lol

I'm currently waiting on info from my trainer as to what she asks for consignment horses, I was just wondering other peoples experiences. Thank you much! Like you said, board, training + % (like 10%) or is it just a bigger %? That was kind of my curiosity.

I told the trainer what I wanted for my horse. She kept whatever she brought over that. I don't know what my horse sold for and have no interest as I got what I wanted.

I used to take in one or two horses at a time on consignment, and this is how I did it:
The owner would tell me their bottom dollar, and if I felt I could get enough on top to make it worth my while, I would take on the horse.
I paid for all advertisements, board and maintenance, entry fees, etc. The seller came out of pocket $0 and typically within 30-60 days would receive their check.
Keep in mind you aren't going to get top market value for your filly, as the consignor will need to be paid for their services. I do however feel like this is the better deal.
If you as the owner are paying the board, entry fees, etc, then where is their motivation to sell your horse going to come from? Just that 10% consignment fee? They're getting paid as long as your horse sits there.
If they are reaching into their own pockets to maintain your horse until it sells... That's motivation to sell.
I would find someone well known in the correct market with good references.

a friend of mine did a deal like this, she got the x amount she wanted, and person selling sold little mare for much much more, the owner actually got screwed, but I guess when make a deal like that its a gamble.....

See, I don't think the owner got screwed if she got what she wanted.

If she wanted more money, she should've done the leg work, advertising, and made the sale herself.

I agree here. If she got what she asked for, she wasn't screwed.

Take horse to trainer.  Trainer may or may not actively try to place horse, may or may not even ride horse.  Trainer still charges full monthly fee.  Trainer makes out like bandit, horse doesn't sell, no one knew horse was for sale.

My experience only.

I wouldn't say she got screwed. If someone told me they want $5000 for their horse and I happened to find someone willing to pay $10,000. Well lucky me lol. Now, I wouldn't TELL someone their horse is only worth $5k and then try to sell for double. That's different. But a horse is worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Some people just like to spend money lol.

10% is usual but we've had brokers where we just told them our minimum and said they could get whatever on top of that if they liked. We sold an older all-around gelding to a youth this way. We wanted like 3500 or something. I think our broker may have made 2000 on top of that. We didn't sweat it too hard. He had him sold in like a week.
