| We have a mare that is 18 and very swayback. Finding a saddle that doesnt make her hurt has become a major job. Anyone have luck fitting a long barreled swayback with now high withers. (we dont run her, trails only) but this group always has tons of great advice. Treeless? pads? Help! TIA |

Location: Kansas | If the swells stand up high enough to clear her withers without rubbing I'd think the next step would be good comfy saddle pads to make up for the room between the saddle and her low back. |

Location: Kansas | Hey, try going to Google and pulling up "saddle pads for swaybacked horses." There's some interesting stuff on youtube.

| i will take one tonight. she has gotten very nasty (bearing teeth, kicking out) when you go to put a saddle pad on let alone a saddle so i want to help her. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I don't mean to pry too much, but do you give lessons with her or just trail riding? are only children or people under 100 lbs riding her? She has to be hurting. While there are certainly plenty of saddle pad options, I'd think, at 18, she might be ready to retire. Some horse's conformation just takes them out earlier. |

She is my friends horse (we have boarded together for 12 years so i know the horse very well). just trails but she has been having her niece ride her (shes a bit heavier than the owner and i are) maybe 30 pounds heavier and the mare has gotten worse. I agree with the retirement but she cant afford two and so her options are limited. She has owned her for 13 years so she's family. if she can find a way to ride her comfortably, she will but i think shes decided to stop the sharing. i feel for her position and am trying to help. |

Location: Always on call..... | My 20 year old barrel horse has gotten progressively more sway back the last couple of years. I've tried a variety of saddles and pads. What's worked the best is a saddle with wider bar flare and a CSI pad. This is the only combo that doesn't fall down into that atrophied spot behind his withers.
She might look at the Pro Choice BioFit pads. They are made for this exact situation and are much cheaper than a CSI. I used one of these for about a year before getting the CSI. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | My sister had a horse that was real swaybacked and she ran him into his 20's and that was the soundest horse I've been around. She rode and ran him in a Carl Ammerman round skirt saddle. I can't remember what saddle pad she used on him. |
