Has anyone done the math on how many feet equal a .10 of a second, say on a WPRA standard set, with good ground a horse that clocks say a 17.0? Just wondering if anyone has a rough estimate on this.

The American education system is failing miserably if you can't figure that yourself...........Just kidding...........I'm not exactly how big a standard pattern is. If you give me the dimensions, and the distance 1, and 2 are off of the timer line, I could figure it in a couple of minutes.

Standard is 90' x 105' with a 60' score.
Barrels are set center of the stake/mark.

Yes, well we already know it is, and it doesn't help when the pupil is more interested in barrel horses, bull riders and beer during her tenure through said system.

Soooo how many feet in .1 second????

Well basically you're looking at 515 ft. assuming you ran the exact length of the pattern...but then you have to account for your approach to 1 being at an angle (so will be more than 60 ft to first.  Then you have to account for the turns being more feet.  And speed rate at different points of the patttern will be different.  But to guess based on all of this I would say you would average 3.2 feet in 0.1 second.

Hard to say because the speed around the barrel and the speed between the barrel are different. You will need to clock you times around the barrel and your times in the straights and do the math... As a HS baseball coach I know my faster kids cover about 2.6 ft every .1 seconds.

There is an article coming in the December Barrel Horse News that addresses timing and pattern issues and how it relates to fairness and records. Steve Pritchard, an engineer, did the math.

I actually played with it quit a bit. I used a circle around each barrel of 10 feet. It would probably be smaller. I used Pythagorean theory to find the distance from 3 back.......... Final answer 3.29 feet per .1 second

If you use the dimensions of the arena you get one thing. If you use the dimensions of the actually barrel pattern you get 425 feet that the horse will travel. That is 25 feet per second and 2.5 in .1 second.

There are too many variable factors to get even an average measurement.

I DID teach Chemistry and Physics. Now I teach early graduation and have to know everything about everything. Very challenging.

I am teaching chemistry and physics this year. I may make that one of our physics problems and break down one of my daughter's runs.

Good... I will know who to go to when my 11 year old grandson needs help in those areas (in a few years!) LOL
