Focus on the female.  While recognizable sire's and sire lines are important, if you could get some daughters of really nice producing mares you would be better off in my opinion.   For example...there is a daughter of Shawne Promise for sale here on BHW.  She is by Confederate Leader.  The important thing is that her dam has produce over $150,000 in barrel earners and has a son (Feature Attraction) that is starting his stud career with one of the hottest names in the business right now.  This filly is young but has the credentials to make a super broodmare, plus she is priced reasonable for what she is.  Get a few like this and you will have one heck of a maternal side to your program.

As others have said, look for mares who themselves have DONE something and are out of mares that have done something so that your produce have a better chance of doing something themselves.
