So the problem of the month is threadworms.  Or so I think.  Horse has had some bald spots and crusty/dandruff-y area under his mane for a couple of weeks with no change.  In the last three days it's gotten worse.  I put an aloe-Vera antibiotic salve on it to soothe it on Monday.  Get there today and there is raw skin exposed. Not just skin, but TISSUE.  I sprayed with Vetericyn, and braided his mane in a way to let it air out.  Went home, did some research and I think it might be threadworms.  He does put his head between panels and itch the top of his mane, as well as under his neck.  He was really itchy with flaky spots on his butt, but that pretty much stopped once I started putting furazone on it and then eventually the aloe stuff and it finally healed the sores.  He was last wormed with......whatever kills pinworms (can't remember which brand) in August.

What at are your experiences?  I know I need to start with ivermectin, and the probably Quest....and that the adult threadworms don't die for 10 years... :(

Double Dose with ivermectin followed by another double dose in a couple weeks. You should see it clear after that. Usually a single dose every five to six week there after or when you start to see some symptoms again.

I do think that if this were my horse-I would be hauling him to the vet! Make sure you get a correct diagnosis! I would also see if I could get a weight on my horse to make sure I'm dosing him correctly.

I think I will have the vet out by this weekend.  He's otherwise happy and healthy looking.  Naturally I go to Google and think worse-case scenario.

When was the last time this horse was dewormed? I would just deworm him.

getting an accurate weight on your horse is a good idea.
weighed my black mare and she was 1271 on a digital walk on scale at MSU. I thought cuz she's 14.3 and lean she was closer to 1000LBs.  She is appendix and her muscles don't look like my cow bred mare

Double-dosing with Equimax is the most popular treatment for onchocerca. Retreat again at double dose by weight two weeks later. It will get worse before it gets better as the dying NTWs emerge.

Check for a bad case of lice ... little bitty tiny white eggs attached to mane or tail hair can drive a horse crazy itching ... once you see a louse ... your eyes will find a lot more since they are small ... figure out how little of this makes a gallon added to water and use a spray bottle to wet mane and tail areas and misty other parts ... you have to do this every 7 days for 2 weeks ... three wettings .... also spray all of your tack and stall with this stuff ... if my memory is correct ... a tablespoonful is all a gallon of water will need ...
https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30e07945-7b6a-11d5-a...

and do a dose of ivermectin to kill the adults immediately and any new colonies that are not yet visible ..

If thread worms ... a tube of ivermectin 10 days apart ... and have another tube to use to smear on the damaged areas of hair ... every 2 days for 2 weeks ....
If you would use ivermectin and quest all the time you would not have threadworms ... it is using the power packs that kill nothing (puts worm to sleep) using Panacur and Safeguard that gets your horses in trouble ... any time you have to use 10X a regular dose plus ivermectin then Quest to do a power pack .... some one is making a bunch of money and some one is being robbed ... lol

GOOD LUCK ...
Do you know why bacon grease was such a good medicine before all these marketeers found out they could rob you?? A Heavy grease will kill adults and freshly hatched larva of most exterior horse parasites ... cost nothing and horse was healed without any problems...
Bacon grease was to a horseman like baling wire or binder twine was to a farmer ... lol .

Good advice and by the way I think it's you I owe a thanks for advising using penicillin to clear up a very very nasty eye in a senior horse.  We'd fought it literally for months.....vets, home remedies, everything we could think of.  The antibiotics cleared it up in a matter of a few days.  It was amazing.

Soonest vet can come out is Monday so we're going with that.  I've contemplated worming but I want to wait for vets recommendation first ( even though I hate waiting this long).  Wound had dried up a little so I put some furazone on it.  Last time I put that on his itchy spots he quit rubbing temporarily so hopefully that'll tide him over while he's turned out.    Will surely update on Monday night!

I have a mare that I self diagnosed with neck threadworms but took her to the vet anyway and it turned out to be a sarcoid that had to be treated with RX meds.
