Transplant Okie Posts: 1206 Location: Always on call.....	One of the few things I don't like in our new house is the fireplace. It's a white molded mantle and shiny black tile. The eventual plan is to replace it with a stone fireplace, but that's low on the priority list. In the meantime I thought I'd paint it and replace the black tile with stone tile. When i tried to remove the black tile around the fireplace insert I realized they had tiled the wall around the insert and then placed the mantle over the top of the tile. (Versus placing the mantle and then tiling in between the fireplace insert and the mantle.). So there is no way to remove those tiles without ripping the mantle off the wall. Since I already tore up the hearth tiles (the ones on the floor in front of the fireplace) I am not sure what to do. Any ideas? Can I tile over tile? Here's what I've thought of for options. 1) put the new stone tiles down on the hearth. Then attempt to paint the black tile around the insert. From the reading I've done online there is a process to get tile paintable. 2). New stone tiles on the hearth and attempt to put the stone tile over the black tile around the insert. 3.) leave the remaining black tile alone, paint the mantle and find a rug to cover where I ripped up the hearth tiles. They are less costly than real and it is very difficult to tell the difference. You can select size, shape and color. We used a piece of quartz (you could use granite) has the hearth in front of ours. Might look at fireplaces on Houzz.com for inspiration.

I guess my question is what do I do with the black tile inside the mantle since I can't remove it without damaging the mantle? I'll check out that website.

But I really don't like that color with the black tile. Nor do I like having stone on the floor and black tile around the fireplace. Sorry the pic is grainy, had to shrink it. Extreme Veteran Posts: 336 Location: Missouri	Suggestion for a cheap and quick fix...I love rag/sponge painting. Instead of trying to get rid of the black tile, what about ragging on a gray or beige to dull it down and give it texture? Give it more of a natural stone look in keeping with your theme. That would take care of the shine and tone down the black. Another idea (more work) - carefully tape off everything else - within a 50 mile radius if you're like me with spray paint - and use the textured faux stone spray paint? They have it at Walmart. It's cheap and looks nice.

One Special Mom Posts: 2205 Location: Mesa WA, USA	For me the natural stone really doesn't show up all though I like it just not with your fireplace. Maybe try laying that stone horizontally instead of vertically and maybe it would show up better. The pattern of the stone would be more of a focal point.

I was just going to paint the awful black tile but I found faux stone vinyl adhesive tile squares at Lowes. They worked perfect to cover the black tile. I don't think its too obvious they are fake until you get really close. Used with real stone tile on the hearth. The terracota color was a Pinterxt inspired whim. Hubby hates it but I am liking it.
