Hi, I am starting a 2 1/2 year old quarter horse on barrels (well, right now just training for riding, but he eventually will be in barrels). I went through hell with my first mare with saddle/saddle pad issues before I finally fixed all of them, but he absolutely DOES NOT like her treeless. Does anybody have any suggestions on best saddle pads/ barrel saddles to try? Please only answer if you have experience with the products, or know someone that does; not if you just got the product or have seen or heard about them.

I like Allen ranch or shiloh saddles I like the looks of a Caldwell but I have never owned or ridden one, I like 100%wool fleece pads I love a cutter pad I'm not sure if they still make them, I have saddle pads that are 15 years old they are worth the money Todd slones and 5 star I'm not a fan of factory produced saddles

For saddle pads, I use csi pads as if my saddle is a little big on my colts, the pad gives enough support to hold the saddle in the proper position.

As for saddles i cannot answer that as you would need to provide pictures or explain his build in more detail.

Saddles that I ride most of my colts in is a billy cook from Oklahoma with 2031, this is the widest one they have IMO, I can generally use this till they get into their 5 yr old year then I need to go bigger.

As for right now my 3 yr old uses this saddles, and fits a 8 1/2 crown c shimmed

I really like the combination of my 5 star pad with my Shiloh Contender saddle. I have the 7" gullet for my 1200 lb. 16 H QH. I like you can get the 5 star in different thickness and they are soft against my horse's back!

After a testimonial from a friend who is a pick up man for stock contractors, I checked out the CSI pad...he said his pick up horse was so sore after every rodeo, he'd just about buckle when he slung a saddle on him. Friend suggested CSI, the guy said his horse held up great with that pad. So I go to the NFR, n stop off at the CSI booth. They have a contraption there that allows you to test pressure on your hand with a 5 star pad, a gel impact, and a styrofoam (Classic Equine?)...then you put pressure using the CSI pad...I cranked 80 lbs out on my own hand, with no discomfort. I am SOLD SOLD SOLD...getting one for Christmas, absolutely. I can't help you with a saddle, but there ARE FLEX TREE, not treeless, if you wanna give them a try, Deb Sibley makes a good one. GO CSI!! Pricey but worth it...$350..small investment...they also have different wool "pads" that go under the actual CSI, so if you have a big horse or thinner built horse, you can adjust.

The best wool pad that you can afford and I love Caldwell saddles. I'm breaking three right now and the TG fits well, the promax will in about two months on one of them.  My pee've is to see horses with saddle marks because someone didn't know better or just didn't give a dam*! If you can get a ride on a Caldwell or a Roohide I would't pass it up. Your horse will ride so nice especially as you start teaching the spin and if your doing cow work or working the flag the sweep is fluid and willing.
