Thanks for all the good advice. I thought maybe there was some supplement I was missing out on because when I get a new horse, they all get started on the worming/vaccine program like if they've never had anything like that done. They have good grass/alfalfa hay, and either pellets or grain, and a mineral block or something similar. I've never had one so hard to get to put weight on. I sold him because of another reason but am looking at either a full sister or a half sister to him, and I know what kind of horse they are and what kind of keeper they are. I've never used Cool Calories or anything else like that, and that's why I'm asking for more info.

I believe horses should be kept as naturally as possible This horse didn't turn his nose up at anything...except bananas, lol. He liked to eat and he ate good, but I'm trying to ensure success for myself and my horses. :) I'll look into some other options than weight gain supplements.

How much hay are you feeding? How much grain & type are you feeding? It's hard to give accurate advice if this is unknown to start with..

After struggling to find quality oats this year we made the switch to Renew Gold. We raise our own alfalfa that is fed at approx 15# per day and they are on a fertilized pasture that we drill rye grass in as well (and set out roundbales in the winter that is also from our farm - orchard grass, timothy with some rye grass). So that literally grain is the supplement. I feed two pounds of renew gold per day.

I had an extremely hard keeper (due to his finicky nervous nature and being sore) that was my test subject before I could make the whole switch.. The picture is 14 days different. I took him OFF the 12# of oats per day and switched to 2# of RG per day along with upping him on the alfalfa maybe up to 20# a day.

I feed what they will almost clean up so it can vary a little bit b/c if there is nothing left at all, I'll add more if they are leaving alot I'll back off.
