Location: Sunny California | I have a protruding disc in my lower back. It causes lower back muscle pain and pain down my leg at times especially but is manageable. My main goal is to be able to keep riding which I am able to do just fine. The problem is that I've gained 25 pounds in the last couple of years because I can't work out. I went to physical therapy and it made me worse. Does anyone else have this issue and if so what have you done to get/stay in shape. I really would like to lose 20 lbs. |

Location: MD | I can totally relate to the back pain keeping you from working out. I have found that yoga has done wonders for me. It was a touch painful at first, but the stronger my back gets, the less pain I have overall. |

| I recommend running. You'll think it's nuts, but I have horrible lower back problems, the X-rays are gnarly, and a good Couch to 5K program strengthened my pelvic and back muscles. Strengthen those muscles, and it stabilizes your frame. My pain is all but gone. Game changer!! There's a great app called Get Running. I totally recommend it! I'd never been much of a runner, but now I love it. There's no prouder feeling than running your first full mile without hurting. You'd be shocked what running does for your riding as well. |

^^ this ... plus proper stretching and yoga ... including a foam roller to roll out your IT band. |

| Go get a steroid shot before the back of your leg goes numb and your leg starts to shake with really bad pain. I know, it happened to me. |

Location: Four Corners Colorado | I have hurt my back several times and had to get better because no one was here to help with chores. I treated with advil and valerian root for mucsle spasms and a very good Lace up type back brace so I could sort of work while it healed. Oh and tiger balm at night. I had to baby it, it gets better little by little. Mine was so bad I couldn't even turn over in bed without waking up in terrible pain. I've learned how to better use my body so I don't hurt it again. Sitting around is the worst thing you can do. I've also had luck with foundation training.

My mm would agree with you on the yoga statement. |

Location: Sunny California | Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a local yoga instructor that specifically works with people with problems. I'll get in touch with her and try to slowly start the running thing. |

Location: God's country | Not trying to steal the OP's thread, but I'm in a similar situation. My pain is from my hip though. I used to love running and it kept the weight off, but it's painful to do now. I've never enjoyed walking at all, prefer to run. Has anyone had experience with this and what did you do? Thanks so much! |

Eat clean, yoga, a good Chiropracter and Cur Ost. If you can eat really clean, no processed foods, whole veggies, protein and no grains or sodas. If I do this, which is really hard for me to do, then that does help the most. |

It could you your psoas muscle way deep inside the hip. A good massage therapist might be able to help with this. It's painful though and might take more than one massage session. |

Location: near Chicago | Swimming, if it can be done safely. Little wear on your joints and it's great cardio/aerobic exercise. It also frees up your back muscles.
This was the number one exercise I recommended to my human patients. It's among the best weight loss workouts you can do while providing muscle toning. |

| Water aerobics, yoga...I had cortisone injections which helped. I also wanted to lose weight and started with the Advocare 24 day challenge. I really like the program and products. I was able to give up soda and sweets almost immediately and feel much better. |

| Im interested to see what is suggested. I have spondylisthesis in my lower back and deal with back pain pretty often. Running and walking hurts. To the point of I have to stop, sit down and let my muscles relax before I can keep going. My psoas is tight also. Chiropractors, stretching and yoga has helped me. |

In the fitness world, there's a saying that I think most trainers agree with: Maintaining a healthy weight (or losing weight) is about 80% what you eat, and 20% working out.
You can spend 4 hours a day at the gym if you want to, but if you eat every meal at McDonalds with burgers and fries, the gym time is not going to do you much good.
Very important to watch what you eat, and eat frequently (at least every 3 hours). Fruits are good, but they also contain natural sugar. Limit your servings and eat them earlier in the day so your body has a chance to use the calories. Make sure to eat plenty of protein. The bulk of what you eat should come from protein and fresh veggies. Carbs are still important but do have lots of calories. Make sure you are eating whole grain carb choices and avoid anything that has been "bleached". Drink plenty of WATER. Most people don't get enough water. For weight loss, the general recommendation is to drink 1 oz of water for every 2 pounds of your body weight. So yes, that means if you are 150 pounds, then you should be drinking about 75 ounces of water a day, or more. Also pay close attention to the condiments you add to your food. For example, truly pay attention to how many tablespoons of salad dressing you add to your salad. Those calories add up. I know for me, when losing weight, SALT intake is very important. Try to keep your salt intake down. The more natural whole foods you can eat, and staying away from processed foods, the better off you are.
I can't speak for any specific exercises as I've never dealt with lower back pain, but I would absolutely meet with a trainer and/or nutritionist so you can have your nutrition on the right track for your weight loss goals.

| I also have a bulging disk. Hurt so bad I couldn't hardly put my socks on in the morning. I started running at the reccomendation of by PT, after a ton of chiropractic and PT. It loosens up the muscles so that I can strech and strenthen the rest of my back. Since I started running I haven't had any real problems. However, I agree with the swimming reccomendation, much easier on your body but would give you the same benefit. I know it sounds backwards but exercise is the answer. |

| Have some of the same problems.. but running irritates mine (pinches nerve to my hip). I had to stop for over 5 months and finally stopped riding in October to try to heal up. Just getting back into running now, but I get off the treadmill and get an ice pack. lol |
