Location: The Great Midwest | Hello!
I am going to be purchasing my first treeless.
I have two questions:
1.) I ride a 14 inch in a tree.... ive heard to go up a size? So I would be a 15?
2.) Favorite Treeless saddle pad?
I have a wide fleece roper style girth, is this ok?
Thank you! |

| I don't own a treeless, but was looking at them at the NFR. The circle y people fitted me for a 13.5, and I prefer to ride in a 13.5 some saddles I can get by in a 14.
As for saddle pads, most people I know with treeless ride in a saddleright (majority) or the thinnest 5 star one can find. |

Location: MD | As someone else said, I ride the same size in my Bob Marshall as I do a treed saddle, but went up a size in the Jackie. I do know that most people who have tried my Bob are usually going up a size when they sit in it from their saddles and like it though. |

Location: Louisiana | Most people say go up a size but I actually went down lol. I ride a 15-15.5 and ordered a 14.5 Tammy. My Bob was a 15.5 and fit fine, but when I sat in the 14.5 Tammy I didn't notice a big difference so that's what I ordered. I've even gained about 30 pounds recently and it still fits pretty good considering I'm fluffy. I use a Saddleright under mine. Someone had an almost new Saddleright on FB last week for $85, I should've snatched it up so each horse can have his own pad. You can get lucky on those tack swap pages sometimes!!
I think your type of girth will be fine, although you'll likely have to get a shorter one. My 16hh gelding uses a 36" on a "normal" saddle, and a 28-30" on a treeless. I think my next one will be a fleece one, or I may just order a fleece cover for the one I have. |

With a Bob Marshall the true Bob Marshall I rode the same size of my treed saddles. But remember if your horse has more of a dip in their back the BM's contour to your horses back and they will get a little tighter. On pads I would use a 1/2 maybe a 3/4 inch 5 star and the cinches I like the roper style. The fleece cinches I like. |

The rigging in the BM keep your feet more even with your hip and you cant really move your feet much, I always move my feet a little more forward. |

| I race in a Circle Y Tammie Fischer Treeless and absolutely love it. My mare is a solid little quarter horse, was getting majorly sore from treeless saddles, and no longer has issues. We were spending hundreds of dollars a month on pressure point correctors and chiropractors, and now she has no issues! However, a treeless is definitely not for everyone or every horse, so try one and even race in it if possible before purchasing. I was allowed to race in mine, and it's definitely different; you feel every movement of the horse and they feel every little movement of you. It will definitely throw both of you off at first, and your horse may not like it.
As far as seat size, I went up an inch because I used to ride English and like to post; going up gave me room to do so. For reference, I am 5'3" and 106 pounds. I ride in a 15 inch treeless.
Saddle pad wise, you can't use a thick pad because it is easier for the saddle to roll, so you would have to try out different pads until you find one you like. I use a thin Back on Track liner and -surprisingly- a DownUnder Australian pad. It works perfectly for my mare, but you will need to figure that out separately. Remember, you won't have the same "pressure point" issues as with a treeless as you did before, so please take this into consideration.
Girth wise, we went down a lot in size- we went from a 34" to a girth we use on the mini's in a regular saddle. Of course, this depends on the style of treeless you get as to what works.
I'm sorry I wrote so much, but I hope this helps!!

Location: The Great Midwest | Thank you all. She is somewhat high withered so I'm wondering if I should go up a size as well. I also like to post the trot. I will continue researching pads to see what is out there.
And on the girth she rides in a 30 inch with a treed saddle.... Will I have to get a mini one? Lol! |

Location: NE Texas | I just bought a Jackie Jatzlau on a whim based on what a couple BB's (thanks NTO and TrackinBubba) shared with me privately and so far I really like it. Even considering selling my other treed saddle to buy a second one. I haven't gotten to make a run in my saddle yet, but so far, it has seemed to fit really nice and has no roll whatsoever. I ride a 5/8" Schneider performance pad under mine and it's perfect. |

Matt just has 3/8" wool pads under his treeless saddles. We got them at R Bar B - I think Russ had to order them though. His Joker is high withered and Honey is not, but he likes the same size Bob Marshall on both of them. I've ridden them both and don't notice Joker making his fit any tighter than little miss round ball Honey. LOL. I ride in a 14" treed saddle and like his 14.5 treeless a LOT better than the 15 inch one he's using on Hawk. I ran my Joker in the 15 inch a couple years ago and felt super loose, insecure, lost both my stirrups and couldn't hustle my horse at all. Put me in a 14.5 and it was another story. I felt safe enough that I could drive Joker across the pen. I'd like to have a treeless for Joker & maybe even Streak and I'd want a 14.5 at the biggest. You're skinnier than me so I wouldn't think you'd want to go any bigger than 14.5 at all. As far as cinch size goes, it depends on how your treed saddle is rigged. I have had some drop rigged saddles that required a lot shorter cinch, more comparable to what a treeless would need. |
