Does anyone have experience with a horse's hind end giving out? A local barn that I volunteer at has a 21yo mare that at a trot her hind end will give out. I don't have any control on whether or not a vet gets called, but would like to know if anyone has dealt with this, knows what could be causing the issue, and what might help? Thanks for any advice :)

Giving out like falling down or dropping down/feeling like she stepped in a hole?

Giving out like both legs fell into a hole, or she's going to sit down.

Loose stifles will give the feeling they are falling into a hole. A vet can flex them and let you know for sure and recommend treatment.

To me since shes at a sale barn and 21 she sounds like she would not be in good health. Does this sale barn use her are is she being sold threw the ring? The older horses that I have ever seen at a sale barn going threw the ring was always on the poor side so if thats the case she could be weak from lack of feed/hay.

My horse has been doing that since he was broke as a two-years-old. He's 18 years old now. He doesn't go down far. Just buckles on the back end for a second when trotting. Like you described. Like he stepped into a hole. It never interferred with anything (two years ago my daughter won the state youth finals on him) and the vet never found anything specific. We tried a few things here and there (a stringent exercise program, shots of Adaquan, etc.,) because I was always worried about it but nothing made a difference. Probably has something to do with the stifles although his films were clean. If this is interfering, try trotting exercises. But you really have to do it. Trot and trot and trot and trot, five times a week. Oops, edited to add, I didn't see this. She's 21. I'd be careful with too much exercise.
