Extreme Veteran Posts: 413	When evaluating a horse and preparing it to compete what are the things that you find most important. Is it conditioned to make a run ? Correct shoeing, balanced teeth, current chiropractic, no lameness or soreness, ulcers, diet? Just curious what's important to different people and see what I'm forgetting.

Saint Stacey	Without a doubt...feet and diet! The old saying "No hoof, no horse" is very true. My daughters mare has a front foot that grows funny and has her entire life. It's been a problem. It was 1/8th of an inch off. She's been off now for 4 months and us just now getting sound. A hard running and turning horse will fall apart if the feet aren't perfect. Diet is important because without the right nutrient level, a horse can't compete at a high level for very long. You WILL have some lameness and soreness if the horse is competitive. It's just the nature of the beast. Managing problemsand being smart enough to see a problem before it becomes a blantantly obvious issue can be difficult. Teeth and chiro are also important. You have to keep a horse healthy and happy if you expect to win.

I don't run if I have not done all I can to make sure they feel good and are not sore-and I am not even competitive.
