What really is known about the Zika virus?  I watched a few news clips on this and have to admit, I'm a little concerned for any pregnant ladies, and I know a few.  Apparently, this virus can cause a horrible birth defect(s).

It's mosquito borne.  Where the heck did this come from?  And at what stage in pregnancy are women/unborn children at risk?

It was first identified in Uganda (Africa) in the 1940s. It got a foothold in Brazil and is likely to spread across the Americas, with the exception of  Canada and Chile. A certain species of mosquito carries it. They have genetically modified mosquitoes of the correct species ready to go to get this under control, but each country will have to approve them, and this is a slow process.  The modified mosquitoes are males that will create sterile offspring and die without biting anyone (only females are blood suckers).

I'm not sure about the specifics on the birth defects, but it's bad.

Current available knowledge on Zika is lacking .... partially because it hasn't reared its head for an "outbreak" of significance in many years.

It is spread by the Aedes mosquito which happens to be hugely populous in the SE region of the US but has been trapped all over our country, South America, and Canada. The subspecies aegypti and albopictusย are known to spread many arboviruses including West Nile, Dengue, and Yellow Fever among others. ย

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has a great website that updates with new information as it is published. http://www.cdc.gov/zika/index.htmlย

The main birth defect noted from a Zika infection is microcephaly, aka abnormally small head, that can result in downstream developmental problems, seizures, blindness, hearing loss etc .... ย http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/microcephaly.html

I am pregnant as well and due in July. Im tempted to wear long sleeves and pants and walk around smelling like citronella! But, I have read that in 2015, Brazil had pregnant women get a new strain of dTAP vaccine before 22 weeks. If you google this, there are conspiracy theories. According to sites, the Zika virus has been around for years without outbreaks or birth defect links, so it does make me wonder. Hmmmm...

(I will say, I am for vaccinations and my kids are vaccinated. This is not an anti-vac post, just a conspiracy post! Lol)

I'd like to know if the trimester you are in when the virus has been contracted comes into play?  Does anyone know?

From what I read, I think it can affect any trimester, the severity may be different is all.

I'd like to know if the trimester you are in when the virus has been contracted comes into play? ย Does anyone know?ย

Semester doesn't matter. The virus can cross your placenta barrier. peer reviewed journal case of Zika and membrane transfer - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3771291/

And for the record .... the conspiracy theory is just that, conspiracy. How many dTAP vaccines were given? How many women were tested before and after the vaccine was given? Did you source this from a conspiracy site, an anecdotal note in a medical journal, a letter to the editor of a peer reviewed journal article, or what?? Just because you read it on the internet doesn't mean it is true unless you can verify the source ..... Spreading conspiracy's with no support is just gossip.

And just think of all the diseases that are being brought in by "refugees". Scary.

I'm assuming you mean Tdap, not dTap. They're really pressing the Tdap here for pregnant women and their families. I trust my doctor, not a conspiracy and she is highly recommending them. I'd rather have a shot then suffer the horrible death of a baby from Whooping Cough.

Good catch, I did mean Tdap. I spelled it wrong

And, yes, I would be vaccinated too.
