So, my boy is a very dirty boy. I am having to clean his sheath every couple of months.... and you couldn't believe the chunks of smegma I get out of there sometimes.... I know it's a thing that needs to be done, but is there something I can feed him to reduce the amount of buildup in there? Or something else I can do?
Yesterday I took out 5 big pieces (2 where big enough to cover over half of the palm of my hand
) and I had just cleaned him in December....

This is going to sound crazy, but quit cleaning him so much. Just remove the bean and leave him be. Dirty horses usually get that way because the body is going into smegma producing overdrive because it keeps getting removed and dried out. Same with your face and hair, wash them too much and they go into overdrive with oil and sebum production trying to compensate. If you feel really grossed out by it, lube him up with some KY and it helps the sheath clean itself by softening and loosening the dried smegma without the drying effects of a cleaning.

I have one just like that! My vet told me to just rinse with a hose and cold water when I give a bath and to only use an actual cleaner a couple times a year. I was cleaning mine monthly because that's how often it got nasty. What was happening is I was disrupting the natural bacteria and flora in there and making it worse. Lol

Thanks, that does make sense, but I feel bad for him, the chunks I found yesterday must have been bothering him.
He really doesn't get a lot of beans, just flakes and chunks of smegma. I only deep clean him (meaning with water and excalibur) twice a year, but his weanie was looking a bit dry.... so that might be adding to the problem as wel...
Can I put the K-Y in there and leave it in there? I don't want him getting irritation or a weird reaction to it. But if that will help loosen up the gunk I sure will try.

Glad I read this.  I'm probably over cleaning as well.

I use baby oil, I've had more than one get irritated by the ingredients in one cleaner or another, never had baby oil cause an issue.

If I'm handy when one drops and I haven't checked recently I'll usually check for beans.

I probably only do a thorough cleaning maybe twice a year? Usually if I notice them not dropping to pee regularly I will clean or if it seems to be bugging them.

You can leave the KY up there, absolutely! It's designed to add moisture to "sensitive" areas. I added a bit once a week and my once grody gelding turned squeaky clean.

Just take it from me, don't buy KY and rope for your horse and a cucumber for dinner in the same transaction. You get looked at a little funny.

Now that's funny, right there.... thanks for the warning.. I am so dense I would do the same thing and not think about it once.......
But seriously, thanks for the tip, I can only imagine how uncomfortable it must be for him...

I used to buy the expensive PH balanced sheath cleaners then my vet told me not to bother and Use Ivory Dish soap. He said its actually softer and horses have less reactions to it then sheath cleaners.

I do not agree. Owning a horse requires grooming... If you own a male horse, cleaning the penis is part of the job...

I have one horse that is NASTY!  He gets the black oily yuck on his leg he is so black and greasy.  He was just cleaned by vet when his teeth got done and is already yucky again 1/5 weeks later.  He wasn't full of beans just that nasty smelly yuck

Dang it told myself that I was going to lay off the cleaning and here I go today reaching up and pulling out 3 chunks of smegma about 2/3 as long as my finger and about as wide as my finger.  Left the wiener alone though LOL

I agree totally with Komet!  If you have a stalled stud or gelding they are going to have bits and pieces of sawdust/shaving that get in there when they roll. My boy has this happen all the time, it can't be helped, so you must clean it out. I just use warm water and dry it out gently with paper towels. Pretty sure you would not like to do your job feeling that uncomfortable!
