| My future MIL is getting out of horses and has presented us with the opportunity to buy her trailer for $20,000 while it can be privately sold for around $35-37k range.
It's been a tough decision because we currently have a 4 horse, and I love the trailer. However we are kind of thinking it would be foolish not to purchase his mom's trailer as in a year or two we could trade it in when we are ready to upgrade. The downside is that hers is a 3 horse and I really don't know that we can stand to lose the 4th stall. We haul anywhere from 3-4 horses to 3 day races. If we only take 3, it's really nice to have the 4th stall for hay/storage. We have a baby on the way, so I am wondering if I'll even be able to haul more than 3 horses at a time, as I don't even know if I'll be able to keep that many in shape with an infant.
Anyway, if we decide to sell our trailer, we are wondering if it's best to leave the LQ of ours as a shell, or if we should finish it out. Right now it is fully insulated, A/C and furnace, wired, pull out couch, and some cabinets that were temporary and should be junked anyway. Fiance works owns a construction/carpentry business and can finish it easily and correctly; it's just one of those deals where your projects always come last LOL.
So, what is better for resale? Do people want a shell so they can lay it out as they want, or do they want a finished LQ? It is a 8' shortwall if that helps. |

Right. I don't doubt his talents, I just don't know if people would rather have their own project or not want to waste time with it. He keeps busy in the winter by finishing fish houses (I attached some pictures - way more paneling than I would ever want in a trailer, but I guess the Fish House people like it since they request it ha ha)
Even if the quality is great, it would still be lacking a Outlaw, Trail Boss, etc conversion label to it.

Oh ok, the work looks really nice in the pictures, sell your trailer as a shell and give the buyers the choice of letting your husband finish it out at the buyers expence. |

That's exactly what I was thinking, if he has the time to take it on and make a little coin someone may take you up in it to have a custom LQ, that is if you feel the 3H suits your needs better |

Location: Roping pen | To capture best resale value on a LQ, IMO, the interior needs to be RV certified. I have "heard" of issues getting trailers financed and insured if they were not RV certified.
To get this certification, the company and employees attend training and continuing ed to keep certification on RV construction.
Most "home made" LQs, no matter how properly constructed, suffer in trade value due to this.
If they are certified, you will find a sticker attached near the LQ entry door stating such.
Good luck!

Location: Buffalo, TX | As a trailer dealer, I can tell you that homemade LQ's without the RV certification do sell for a LOT less than people think. Leave it a shell and you will end up better on the money end of it. |
