Frodo - 2016-03-02 8:12 AM Beyond belief tragedy.  So sad for the family.  A great argument for keeping those gates closed at arenas if there's any way possible.  I've seen this happen several times.  If the gate is closed eventually someone can step in and stop the horse or they just run themselves out.
I think you've got to look at each individual facility and decide the best set up.  At a facility like this - with a short alley and then asphalt - there is NO WAY that the gate should've been left open.  It's heartbreaking that this was so preventable by closing a gate!

When will rodeos take safety seriously and address dangerous setups and ground?  Whole wreck started because her horse fell on the 3rd barrel.

The first thing that came to mind was what happened as far as shutting a gate was concerned?  If they had been able to shut a gate the odds of her being fine would be very very good, (unless in the unlikely event the horse was so panicked it just didn't see the gate), and there was also mention of wearing a helmet in another article I read.  And I thought,  we actually have to be pro-active to avoid injury from the ground conditions etc.  I'm considering checking out helmets because of this.   It doesn't change my mind about the gate/safetfy situation responsibility, that is huge in my mind.  I don't know what the place looks like or what the setup is/was.

What a terrible tragedy.  It keeps crossing my mind and is causing me to think about where I want to barrel race.

As someone who lost a child to rodeo, please do not argue and speculate on this thread about the what ifs. Just be in prayer for the family and let them know you care.

Also, if you know the family send money directly because GoFund takes about 8% of donation for their profit.

Always so saddening to lose one of our fellow barrel racers - especially during their event, doing what they love. Bittersweet.

Prayers for her family and friends and all of us barrel racers who are affected.
