epoh - 2016-03-23 12:24 PM Trading with a friend, yes. Trading with a stranger, no...Usually when people want to trade it is because they feel that they are getting the better end of the deal such as: They see your horse worth more $ than if they sold theirs outright...Otherwise what is the point in trading? Someone ultimately has to see the other horse as being worth more than their own... Kind of like a cutting your losses type of deal

I am the complete opposite here

?I have traded multiple horses and the only one I got screwed on was when I traded with a friend.  The horse I traded originally came from him and he wanted him back, I ended up with a dud and sold him for far less than what I had paid for the orignal horse.  He went on to be a dude horse and would turn and go back to the barn if he was done.

We've traded two horses with the same person, a close friend.
Each time it just kinda happened that we each had what the other wanted and it worked out. The first trade we had a mare that was a nice practice rope horse but not super fast or strong. He had a nice bred, big 2yo with proven parents, and needed something for his kids to learn to rope on. My husband made a nice horse out of that colt, we still have him and it's been 5-6 years.

The second trade was last summer. Hubby had a heel horse for sale that he just didn't get along with. Our friend had ridden him a few times when his rodeo horse was hurt, and liked him. They had a barrel horse that was too much for their little girl. I had run him a couple times for them trying to sell him.
The subject came up one day and we decided to trade. It worked out for both of us! It also happened at the right time, if I hadn't had P, I would've been without a horse at all for a while there.

I have only traded once. It was a very favorable arrangement, a trainer friend who checked it all out, including with the vet, and helped me. I was a Senior rider with a horse that was way to fast for an old lady, and a bit kooky.

A younger gelding Martha 6 Mood, with a way lot of talent, for an older guy 14YO, own son of Bully Bullion. It was a perfect match. My M 6 Mood gelding fit the younger rider who was willing to put up with his quirks. I got an older gelding, best horse I ever owned. He took care of me, and is now taking care of my Granddaughter.

Don't shy away, but be smart about it. We keep in touch after over 5 years, and we both believe we go the best end of the deal. Perfect!

That's how you know it was a good trade!! :)

I traded a 2 year old filly for a 5 year old barrel futurity flunk out. I didn't have time to mess with a baby, and wanted something that could haul right then. Made the trade sight unseen and had a hauler deliver my filly and bring my gelding back up here (IN to TX). I hated the gelding I got for the first 3-4 months, then he came around and I couldn't imagine my life without him

I traded once a couple of year ago. I don't think I will be doing that again. I had an ex lesson horse he was 17 at the time, quiet and anyone could ride him. I had listed him for $2500 and this lady inquired about a trade. She had a registered thoroughbred mare to trade. We met at an arena and tried each others horses, haggled for a minute over terms, and then traded. The mare was nice and quiet to ride. Well fast forward about a week I had only ridden her twice and she went lame during both rides. I contacted the lady and she told me that there was nothing wrong with her and that I had ridden her too hard. I only did w/t/c and was on her a total of 15 minutes if that.... I ended up getting her to take the mare back but she wanted to keep my gelding. I told her $2500 for him and she flat out refused and said she cant afford that. I ended up letting him go for $1600 just because it really was a great home. The whole experience put a bad taste in my mouth about trading
