When I change hands between 1st n 2nd, my mare wants to drop too soon n cut off pocket. I tune and train with 2 hands, and I don't mind running with 2 hands, to a certain degree...that is, I am getting older, and want the safety of my horn. What would be your suggestions for teaching this very cow bred mare that just a tiny touch of switching hands does NOT constitute an immediate drop??? I want her to wait till I sit and say whoa. I've done some break-off exercises and reverse arcs, going past barrel all at slow work. But when I run, I go to change hands and whoop, she drops too soon for that barrel!! EDUCATE ME! Please! and thank you :)

Chances are your dropping your hip when you change hands causing her to drop.

Best thing to do is ride two handed till you get to your pocket cue her to turn properly then drop down to one hand

I'll accept that as a possibility, and rewatch my videos, and try to be keenly aware of that. Thank you!

Practice at home the way you would as if you were running.. When you drop your hand and outside rein the bit moves and lots of horses use that as a cue to turn. You will have to teach her not to rely on that anymore.

My daughter use to ever so slightly drop her inside shoulder cueing her horse to start turning too soon.  She had a hard time staying square so she did not switch hands till she sat for the turn.

I have a gelding I have to stay 2 handed til my leg is past the barrel, still retraining myself to do this as we just started together. its a difficult task, but there is no way this horse will be able to be retrained. he knows his job and its me that has to adapt to him. He turns so hard and fast he will never run past a barrel

Do you ride 2 handed in between barrels or do you switch hands and stay on the horn.  When you come out of the barrel go back to two hands and drive into the barrel before you go to the horn again.

Similar to my cowbred gelding. Coming off first I will hussel with both feet for 2 or 3 strides but by about halfway across the pen I am only using my left foot to keep him moved over, stood up, and give him some shape. I also switch hands by about halfway and I'm shaping him to tip his nose in without turning. Once I get past the barrel all I have to do is sit, he's ready to wrap it with just a little more rein.

I practice one handed a LOT when I'm not working the barrels, moving him in and out on a circle and tipping his nose in on a straight line so he understands just a little rein does not mean plant your butt and turn. I also do figure eights at the lope and practice moving him over the same way I would between barrels before we change leads.

Some very good thoughts have been brought up by others already. Might I ask, what type of headgear do you run this horse in?

And I would ask when you switch hands where do your eyes go?  To the barrel? between the ears? make note of it the next time and try looking down the outside of the neck.  Your hands, eyes, and body work together.

This is what I do as well on my very settee mare, I work her a lot one handed so we both learn.  That way you can make sure you are cueing properly and your horse understands what you are asking.

I am 52, and using two hands between first and second is history for me. I was having the same problem. I solved it by counting to 3 after I complete first before I change hands. I kick with the rhythm of counting. It keeps me centered on my horse(s) and they don't anticipate the second turn as much.
