Member Posts: 10	This might be a stupid question and sorry if it is. Since heartgard is Ivermectic/pyrantel, could I just give my dog the same Ivermectin & pyrantel as my horse to protect against heartworms? Is it safe? Does it have the same effect?

I just read the headlines Posts: 4483	I would ask my vet. I know that some Aussies are very sensitive to Ivermectrin.

Cute Little Imp Posts: 2747 Location: N Texas	I use sheep drench. It is already diluted down, so is safe to give to dogs. DO NOT use Ivomec for cattle. It is too concentrated and not safe for dogs. I put it in a syringe and give 1 drop per 10 lbs. I either put it on a treat, or on their food (they each have separate bowls at feeding time). Some collie breeds are very sensitive to dewormers, so check with your vet first. I get mine at Tractor Supply, but if you ask an employee if it's ok to use on dogs, they'll probably tell you no because they can't be responsible if you administer it incorrectly.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1035 Location: TN	Don't give it to any type of collie because they can't handle Ivermectin, but my parents use Ivomec on their labs (per their vet's instructions). Just a tiny bit will do it.

The Bird Lady Posts: 6440 Location: The end of the Earth, SE AR	In southeast Arkansas, heartworms have built up a resistance to ivomec products, including those designed for cattle and horses. Veterinarians do not recommend them. We use moxidectrin sheep drench on our outside hunting dogs and Advantage Multi/Advocate on our inside dogs.
