I have a friend that is having a kidney removed due to cancer next week.  Does anyone know the recovery time for this type of surgery?  In the hospital for a couple of days? or a week?  Trying to figure out what type of help she is going to need when she goes home.

Thanks.  My friend is older too but very active.  She helps take care of her widowed sister-in-law who has some mental issues and doesn't always remember to take her meds or eat.   My friend does have a daughter but she lives out of state halfway across the country.  We are all just hoping for the best.

My husband had a kidney transplant last year. His donor was our 35 year old daughter. He was in the hospital about 7 days, she was much shorter. They both were admitted on wednesday for presurgery stuff, transplant was thursday. She was discharged saturday. She stayed out about 5-6 weeks from work. But she had never had any type of previous surgery. She came thru great. No problems for either of them. She was naturally sore, but was up walking day of surgery, walked to my husbAnds room to check on him. It was a life saving event which gave him a new life. So in answer to your question, soreness yes, but take it easy, dont try to do too much, and take medication as needed. Relax, take things slowly, but move, work the soreness out. My daughter said Later, it seemed like her flank was "empty" with the removal. But that too went away. Best of luck, help as they require, but offer too.

Thanks for the information.  My friend is pretty strong and active for her age and will be dedicated to following the doctors orders for recovery.  We don't know yet if any chemo will be required but that could be an added hitch.  Praying for the best.

Hi,
My husband had his kidney removed in 2010 due to kidney cancer. He had it done in Mayo via robot. It was about  4 days in the hospital and 1 month to get his mojo back. He is doing geat, back to ranching , roping, riding, he is the picture of health. Best of luck to your friend. I know cancer is scary but there is life after it..my husband and I both living proof  :-
