Location: Montana | Vet just did a breeding exam on my mare & she has uterine cysts. She's a maiden mare, 15 y/o. Vet gives her about a 50/50 chance of getting in foal, & he's a well respected vet & the best repro vet in our area. She's not coming into heat yet, but it is early for here, her follicles are about 10mm right now. We're going back in a month to see what's going on then. Would you go ahead & try to get a baby from her knowing what you know now or just enjoy her for the horse she is? I know it's a personal decision, but it wasn't the news I was hoping to hear either. I know it's all a gamble but would love to have your experiences and opinions as I don't have experience with uterine cysts, good, bad or indifferent. From what I read, it sounds like they can be no big deal, and then again it can be a big issue. The vet didn't recommend doing anything about them. Thanks.

Location: Royal J Performance Horses, AZ | 3 of my broodmares have uterine cysts and i haven't had any problems. One of them is a 20 year old mare thats taken in foal 3 years in a row.
I think it varies on the severity/quantity. and other factors. |

Location: Somewhere around here | Do you know how severe they are? A little off topic but I went to the ER (for the record, I didn't want to go) for some major cramping in my ladies region, same as being on my time of the month sort of cramps. They did an ultra sound and said I had a cyst that burst (thus the pain) but went away after a few hours, heat, and some pain killers. The lady told me they're usually nothing to worry about. I have one kid and haven't really had any trouble getting pregnant before.
I know I'm not a horse but that's my two cents. |

My mare has at least 3 cysts (I had a lot of information to synthesize today so I can't remember exact number the vet counted) and from what he talked about it didn't really pay to try to remove them. No one, to his knowledge, in Montana does the laser removal of cysts. He said that oftentimes (and he indicated a mare he had done in December) they come back even after they are removed. He also wants to see what the cysts do when she starts cycling. So my guess, from what the vet said, the severity of the cysts is minimal considering, but it would harder on average to get her in foal because of them. As the vet said, they can be no problem or they can be all the problem. It was somewhat disappointing to have my 80/20 likelihood of getting her in foal reduced to 50/50. And as with most things, I'm doing as much research as I can now that I know, and have to wait another month for the next appt.
cecollins: Thanks for the info...btw your profile pic looks exactly like my mare...after she has been rolling in the mud! LOL.

Location: In The Land of Cotton | My mares both have them. 19 and 20. I have not had a problem getting them in foal. One actually does really well on foal heat. I just do more checks later for a heartbeat.
And, no, I would not get them lasered out. |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | This is kind of off subject...But did she have any problems performing in the arena? We had a mare that had at least one cyst and she was a witch!! We did a couple of different things to help her but never bred her. |

| My mare is 23 and has cysts that are big enough that we have to wait until day 21 to check to see if she is in foal.
She requires reguqmate for the first 60 days and then a recheck of estrogen levels. With the exception of last year she has taken the first time. The vet blames the amount and quality of semen for her not taking the first time around.
Patiently waiting for this baby that is due May 1 st |

She did great in the arena, some very, very minor gate issues when in heat, and only if you asked her to go in the arena more than once (like for a time only, then a run) but not witchy.
It sounds like I should go ahead and give it a shot, provided nothing else crops up that will be an issue. At least that way I can say I tried. :) It had me worried for a while though, and bothered me a lot, which made me nervous and you guys helped along with most everything else I've read.

| Make sure your vet maps out them out. Cysts can cause twins to be missed. We breed on average 200 mares a year. Lots of issues with lots of them and cysts are nothing compared to some other issues you could get lol. |

I read about the twin thing being a concern, which worries me a bit (along with the other issues of the embryo not attaching to the uterine wall, and everything else I read about), but am fairly confident in this vet and his ability. I asked him, if it was his mare (they are horse people and he comes from a family that has raised horses for year) if he would go ahead and try to breed her, and he said he would. I just have not dealt with uterine cysts, so I wanted some more input. :) |
