My 1D horse was injured a year ago. During the course of his therapy we put him in aluminum front shoes with full pads. I can't tell you what a difference it has made in him. His injury has been healed for awhile now, but the shoe set up we have him in makes him move better than he ever has, so I really don't want to change at this point.
I'm starting to condition him and work barrels a little, and hope to start running him in a couple of months.

My question is this: Does anyone run their 1D/Rodeo horses in aluminum front shoes with full pads? Do they hold up? Can they get as good of traction?
My horse is a true 1D horse and uses himself very hard.

Opinions? Experiences?
Thanks!

Yes, my good rodeo mare has competed for a year now with the round aluminum wit full pads. She had a fractured coffin bone. With the excellent Vet care from Dr Amy Jergens she is shutting the clock off on all types of ground. Do what works for your horse. ??

I had a really nice horse that I needed to use full plastic pads filled with silicone under her front shoes. I also used a rim shoe in front. She ran awesome in this set up. Her feet were really thin soled and this gave her the protection she needed.

My gelding has been in aluminums with pour in pads for 3-4 years (barefoot in winter). He had some inflammation in his bursas and had thin soles. This is the setup my vet and shoer came up with and my gelding LOVES it. We started out with full pads and honestly had no problems with footing. He ran in deep ground to small hard track pens. He slipped one time and even though I KNOW it had nothing to do with the pads I asked my shoer to go 1/2 to 3/4 full so a little dirt could build up in there. It was strictly a mental thing for ME. He runs hard and uses himself a tremendous amount.

My gelding licks and chews after the first shoe is tacked on. Two years ago he had an abscess and it was 80% drained by the time my shoer came out but he was hesitant to do the pads cause he didn't want to trap anything in there. We opted to put regular rim shoes on him for that turn. My gelding never licked or chewed or just wasn't as "happy". 5 weeks later we put his aluminums with pads back on and he was back to licking and chewing. He actually shows affection to my shoer now, it's the darndest thing.

My gelding is more of a 2D/3D horse but he has run in aluminums most of his career and after an injury I ran him with a full pad for a season. never had any issues. they do wear a little more I would say but nothing uncontrollable. Sometimes I got 2 settings out of my aluminums but if I ran him hard, I usually only got one.

Are you talking about a full aluminum plate with pads, or just regular aluminum shoes? Just curious!

Longneck - just regular aluminum shoes with full pads underneath. Sorry I don't know what the pads are made of - some kind of plastic stuff, but not aluminum.

Quite a few pro rodeo horses have/do run in full pads. I've run a couple myself. I've never had an issue with traction but, my horses tend to be butt draggers and don't turn on their front end. Would I prefer to not have a full plastic pad? Yes, but I've used them for horses with thin soles, etc and would again if I had a horse that needed it.

Thanks for clarifying. I was just curious if people were talking about running with pads and a full aluminum plate on the shoe or aluminum shoes with pads and no plates.
