*That much* of a behavior difference I'd be leaning towards ulcers, pinching tack, and pain. A lot can happen even on a trailer ride home, I'd spend the money and have your vet check every tooth, break out the hoof testers, flexion test everything, look for soft tissue soreness.
"Easy" things like loping a straight line, trotting straight lines, backing up straight, under saddle - how does he do? Will he lope simple circles or is it a battle? (With the barrels out of the picture)
He's fine without barrels.....a little high strung but nothing dangerous. He did good when I hauled him away from home (without drugs) he never reared or tried to run off. He seems so far worse at home. |

I doubt given he is older and been given reserpine you will be able to eventually go without. I do not understand this "drug free" thing. This is a high pressure sport. Lots of pressure is placed upon our horses. If giving them something to help ease their mind., prevent stress which cause ulcers, and yes as you said help where they don't need anything bc they have been conditioned with a drug to know performing is not stressful and be drug free. Give the shot of reserpine. Message me if you want more info how to manage this horses stress more effectively.

The seller should have been honest and up front that the horse functions better on a drug, instead of being shady and letting the horse go off his meds. It's just like a human who is doing well on their anti-depressant and then cold turkeys' it.... they start feeling sick and acting it. I'd have the horse back on the meds that were working. |

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | First thing I would do is TREAT for ulcers. Not omeprazole - as it doesn't actually heal them. After you treat, then put him on an ulcer preventative and see if you can reduce use of the other drugs. It will definitely help. |

Drugging them the rest of their lives is also hard on their kidneys and liver. How could it not be?!?! I'm old school I guess but I've never given my young ones or older horses drugs to calm them. This is all new to me. What I thought wasn't common seems to be very common now.....

| Barrel racing world has gotten out of control with the drugs, as only discipline that is not tested for drugs with exception of the pro rodeos. We actually need more horseman in the business, and less drugs. JMO |

Ummm Omeprazole is the ONE THING absolutely scientifically proven to cure them. It stops acid production and allows the stomach time to heal. Then you take them off Omeprazole and can put them on a preventative like Ranitidine and probiotics or prebiotic supplements. Some people use aloe vera and other natural substances as preventatives. |
