Question for people who breed or buy broodmares- Im trying to sell my mare as either a broodmare or a trail horse. Does being 5-panel tested an advantage or does it matter more on bloodlines?

to me it does. Mine are all race bred and I still 5 panel them all or require the seller to. So far so good.

I haven't 5 paneled any of mine, but if I had a pedigree that raised any red flags, I would. In the case of my mares I can easily look at their sires who are n/n and other close relatives who have been tested.Β

The test is $ 65 if aqha member, 125 if not. AQHA does not require the testing on a stallion unless they breed a certain number of mares. I just bought a mare and did not require her to be tested. If you are knowledgeable about bloodlines I don't think it is necessary.

Actually, AQHA now requires the 5 panel test for all stallions before any of their 2016 or later foals can be registered. The 25+ mareΒ limit only applied to the 2014 breeding season. Any stallion that covered even one mare in 2015 must be 5 panel tested to get their foals registered.

My mares are both 5 panel tested. I honestly don't know if I would buy a broodmare that hadn't been tested. Most likely if I was really interested in an untested mare I would pay for the test myself before I decided whether or not to buy. What is nice is if the mare is 5-panel N/N and you are only breeding to N/N stallions, you don't have to pay to test your foals. 5 Panel negative is automatically printed on their papers as long as they've been parentage verified.

I tested mine because of the chance of PSSM. None have red flags for anything but PSSM can show up anywhere. That is the only one I am concerned with too since race lines don't carry HYPP or Herda. GBED I know little about but it doesn't seem to be found much in the race lines.

The 5 panel is $85 and always has been (to members). It's required (from now forward) of all stallion who breed even one mare before the foal can be registered. Some people think mares will be phased in next. There are 3 dominant and 2 recessive disorders represented on the 5 panel. The dominant ones are PSSM1, HYPP and MH. If you don't know what they are, here's a link. https://www.aqha.com/membership/resources/genetic-testing/

APHA is following AQHA with their own testing requirements. They will start with the 2017 breeding season to require stallions to be tested and they have an additional test required for OLWS.

We bought my gelding on the condition he was 5 panel negative. That said, I'd definitely want to test a mare I'd be breeding and passing genetic information on to offspring.

Yes it would add value and when the PSSM type 2 test gets on the market it will make neg horses worth even more.

I tested my only broodmare because the stallion she is booked to is a GBED carrier.  I think it was well worth the $85.00.  She tested N/N on all 5 tests.
Next year, I'll pay close attention to the stallion's 5 panel test results.

I'd guess that right now, it would depend on the mare. If she's an expensive mare, it might matter more. If you are wanting $850 for her then it might just be money down the drain.
