| My filly got into the fence and tore her knee open really bad.....she was taken to the vet, they cleaned, stitched and wrapped and we were told to keep wrapped, stalled and change wrap daily with just water to keep it clean. This happened 2 weeks ago today. She was doing well and stitches were staying in until about 5 days ago. The start of proud flesh, which is needed in healing and I don't think is an issue YET, but trying to get ideas on how to treat from this point on. Vet has seen her again and told me at this point the wrapping won't do any good because the stitches came out. So he stated to keep her stalled, do a saline wash twice a day and just keep as clean as possible. Any other suggestions as to how to treat this injury? I worry about her being sound if she does heal up fine. Thank you in advance :)

| I had been doing water therapy on it but was told to not do cold hosing anymore and just keep it clean. Others have stated to me that continued use of cold water will stall the healing process. Just to use a saline rinse to flush it out and that's it. I worry if I don't bandage it she will bite and pick at it also. So...you all think continue with the water therapy?? |

Location: Kansas | I would try some underwoods. My yearling filly sliced her face open down to the bone (like yes you can actually see the skull), I have been using underwoods and baking powder on the wound. Starting to heal pretty nicely |

I actually like using Wonder Dust on injuries like that.
^^^Me too! Would try it now since wound is open and healing, I think this stuff really helps, and have always had good luck with minimal scaring and hair growing back. Good Luck! |

Location: Arizona | I treated a wound very similar to that on my sister in law's horse one summer, except hers was right in the center of the knee. If you are having problems with proud flesh, definitely get Underwoods. The stuff works amazingly well, especially on awkward, hard to heal spots. All Wonder Dust has done for any wounds I've used it on is make the proud flesh blow up, especially leg wounds. I know some swear by it, but I just have not had good luck with it. When proud flesh is involved, I go to Underwoods or black pepper & ACV. One thing I did with my SIL's mare was cut up an old fly mask and tape it over the wound - with 1 of the pointed eye sections over the front of the knee so the netting didn't actually touch the skin around the cut. It worked really well for keeping bugs & dirt out of the wound but still allowed it to "breathe." |

Location: Arizona | Not sure if this has been discussed in BHW before either, but keep in mind that Vetricyn's formula has changed - their license to use a specific cleansing agent in the original formula expired a year or so ago (if I'm remembering correctly). Now the original formula is marketed as Microcyn. Microcyn is good stuff, I like using it as long as their isn't a proud flesh problem. |
