so my mare is coming along nicely, however we are lagging in our turns..she's got a nice pattern on her, but how do I get my momemtum and speed going around the barrels? Any good videos to watch to help this? It could be me sitting too early, I'm not a 1D rider at all...but wanted to hear other peoples opinions. She's not shouldering or cheating me. Just doesn't have that fire or drive leaving. Not sore. Thanks!

Number one cause ..
Rider has bad habit of pulling on reins to re-establish their balance after getting 1-2 steps behind in the turns ..

Watch your videos very carefully and watch your hands and where they are on the reins .. longer reins will help correct this bad habit .. and practicing with split reins at home to learn how to shorten or lengthen either rein with your fingers while holding reins with one hand ..
Do a lot of two handed riding working only one rein at a time to move horse left or right or to hold horse off the barrel ..

Short reins forces you to lean forward even when going straight .. when turning you get thrown back and rider gets into horses face ..

You have to get her stronger in her circles and teach her to move her feet and power through the turns. Circles, fast circles, slow circles, corkscrews and gasing through the small circles.

You have to get her stronger in her circles and teach her to move her feet and power through the turns. Circles, fast circles, slow circles, corkscrews and gasing through the small circles.

This! You need to get her where she can lope correct circles around the barrels collected, nose tipped, body bent, and hip in. Start at a walk trot, before you teach at a lope. Once they learn to hold their body position, they will keep forward motion and that's where you get your fast turns.

Thanks everyone, this quote really makes sense to me...practice perfect circles...thank you

i would say maybe she is not being completely round, my favorite exercise it trot to first with being slightly bent to right where the check point drop outside rein trot several circles then go strainght toward second keep the horses hips to the left of the straight line, the stop at check point then drop the outside rein the do several circles, the do same thing at third.. you horses will some times get there hips tipped out and it will cause this. in other words going straight to first they will anticipate turing they will not be straight between your reins they will have there front end tipped to inside and will not track correctly for the fastest way around the barrel. all young horses do this and will continue unless you change that.
