After a lengthy stall rest for a bruised ddft and superficial tendon injury from kicking the stall wall my gelding finally was cleared but He still wasn't quite right so I brought him back to the clinic. Vet started from the bottom up hoof tested nothing, flexed the pattern went slightly lame. we x rated his pattern does have some mild arthritic changes but we also found where he fractured the wing of his coffin just the tip and it is separated. And looks like fiberious tissue Is filling in instead of bone. Vet said this is one of the more favorable type of fractures because it does not involve the joint. What's crazy is he didn't react to hoof testers!! Blocked the foot and he went sound. Vet suggested stall rest, bar shoe and a pad. Farrier had come over and put the special shoe. This was 3weeks ago. Well my horse got out his stall the other day and by the tracks in the dew it doesn't look like he was going buck wild. But who knows what "fun" he had. So I said lets do a little straight line lameness exam him while he's out.. wouldn't hurt? He went sound as can be! Obviously I'm not gonna jump on him and ride off into the sunset just because he's sound with the shoe. I'm abiding by my vet and Giving him stall rest till the fall. And go from there.
But what are your experiences with this type of injury and out come?? Does anyone have a horse still running or riding with this type of injury?

My horse fractured his coffin bone a few years back, when he was 18. His was right down the middle of the bone and DID involve the joint. He was on stall rest for 9 months, then pasture turnout with light riding and a bar shoe another 4 months. I was able to enter a barrel race right at a year after he fractured it. He still wore the bar shoe with clips for another year (so 2 years total). Last year and now this year he's just back in regular shoes and activity. I put Soft Rides on for hauling or if he has to stand on concrete for very long. He's 21 and still running in the 2D, so I would say he fully recovered. :-).

Glad yours is just a wing fracture. Those heal much faster.

my mare is healing from this now........bucking and playing in pen and must of kicked the panel where I have a solid pole to tie...

anyway my vet said re xray in 4 months and back to running barrels by September... he also said wonderful prognosis for this type of injury.  He also said its fairly common and the 2nd one he had that week........also with Limited excercise, bar shoe with clips................

it really stinks and she is my best horse for everything but heck it could be worse.............sigh
