Use one on all horses. Just pick one you want. Basically all same. We have a Pro Cutter. RoboCow made in CA. Others US.All are good. Find someone to help you learn to use the flag. Most go to fast.

We have a pro cutter as well.
100% agree about getting someone to help you use it. Slow is better on the flag, in my opinion.
As far as where to find one reasonable priced, look for a used one via facebook, cutting trainers, etc. Even used they aren't cheap.

The barn I worked for had 3 systems, a motorized flag, a mechanical cow and a man powered flag. The trainer did not like the motorized systems because he said the horses would start anticipating the noise rather than the waiting for the movement, plus, there isn't a big variance in speed.

His favorite flag was the man powered flag. It consisted of an old stationary bike, a small wheel on the other end and an old saddle blanket. It kind of looked like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQKeH7povNA but he pedaled the stationary bike instead of running it by hand, plus he used an old saddle pad as his flag by attaching rings to the each end of the top of the pad and tying the rope through the front ring and running a second rope that stretched the working distance of the flag but was stationary through the back ring. This allowed the horse to focus on the movement rather than the sound.

The new ones are quiet. And set speeds as needd. From the remote also. Started colts for Bill Freeman. He had one of first ones. Not real accurateBill Riddle is friend we roped together for several years. Showed me the basics. From there you still have to ask questions. New ones work very well. We have 1503 pro cutter. Most use that. Very durable.

I've always had cattle, goats and/or bison, but not where we are now. I've been looking at getting a flag. Since I have never used one, this has been helpful.

We have a Pro Cutter 1502 and like it. I don't have experience with other brands, but I think more people use a pro cutter.

I do have a question, if anyone has an answer. We don't have electricity run out to ours right now. Does anyone have their set up on solar and run off a battery? What set up and where did you get it?

No we don't have power either, but we run ours off of a generator.

My arena is too far away from power.  It will cost over $5K to get it run there.

I would think you would have to have some really good solar power for it though.
