She ran loose on the track with her leg broken before they could catch her. I saw that race and it made me sick, and wont watch any more races because of the break downs of these young horses, have watched a coupled but now since the others no more for me, just heart breaking..
I think you have the year wrong as I thought it was 1990 Breeders Cup (I LOVED Unbridled which is the only reason I remember the year) but yeah I remember that vividly....my Mom and I were just horrified watching it. I was still a kid and it certainly left a vivid impression. There was actually three of them that year because another one that was injured on the track I remember hearing they had to put him down too.
I missed the Preakness this year but after hearing all that I'm kind of glad I missed it. |

| Here's one that will date me - anybody remember in 1975 The Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure match race and Ruffian broke down? I was only 10 and I'll NEVER forget that, it was heart breaking. |

I remember it well. Matching a filly against a colt was the first mistake. That was a terrible day for horse racing.

Same here Roxie, not a fan of the horse track or any discipline that starts them way too young. |

Can you explain what this means? It may be obvious but my mind is drawing a blank! |

I remember. It was 3 decades before I would watch another horse race. |

| The pace was way too fast for the distance, which likely led to Nyquist bleeding |

| If a racehorse bleeds during a race, arent they banned from competition? I thought that was why lasix was used on so many even that were not known bleeders.. Could someone clarify for me? |

I was not yet alive when Ruffian had her match race but she is one of my favorite fillies in history. They compared her to Secretariat.. Her demise was heartbreaking for sure. What a magnificent athlete she was. |

No necessarily. If they bleed out and the vet see, they can be given I think it's 10 days for first offense. If they bleed back the vet may not know when watching them. There's nowhere that I've read that he bled, just an elevated white blood count so seems he's fighting off something. |

That day still haunts me...RIP Ruffian. The loss of Go For Wand was a devastating day as well, along with Eight Belles...the list is much too long of heartache at the track. I love watching horse racing, but usually watch the replays first. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Fastest opening quarter in Preakness history...if you watched all the races or caught the Chuck Lang 6 Furlong race which Justin Squared won (a TB sprint) they ran that race with a 23. ? opening quarter. Nyquist ran that 22 and then got pressed by speed horses all the way down the backside, he never got to rate down, slow the pace much and relax. He probably feels a bit like Sham did in the 73 Belmont, jockey and trainers used his guts up that day. Hope Nyquist comes back sound mind and sound body from this. |
