I run an older horse and it worries me to pieces. I worked him regularly and I watch his diet and how he acts like a hawk, also I make sure I don't run his legs off ( safe his runs for the shows that count) ....Nevertheles his age worries me( early 20s and going strong) mostly after this horrid event

I lost a 6 yr old mare to a heart condition, she went from being full of energy to being listless, in about a 2 week period...one thing she did as well, was point with her right leg when she stood.
She was found dead in her stall one sad morning, and the autospy revealed a very enlarged heart, that was pale in color.
We thought we were dealing with a lameness problem, and in the end it was heart pain that caused her to point her leg.

ccarpe18 - 2016-05-25 12:36 PM I feel like I have been hearing about these heart attacks WAY more often. Is this just due to social media now? Or is it really happening more often? I had also been wondering the same- if there was a way to tell or help it from happening.

I couldn't imagine what any families are going through who have had this happen.

I don't think it happens any more often - it's just that news can spread so much more quickly and further now with social media.

We had an eight year old mare die of a heart attack. ( The vet came out & posted her )
She had foaled about 2 weeks prior. She was in good condition looked & acted completely healthy. She was out in the pasture with her foal. We called them in to grain them, she was running up the hill with her foal beside her & just fell over. I ran to her & she was dead before I got there.

I don't think you can predict when a heart attack will happen.  One of my favorite horses was still winning team pennings at 24 yrs. old, and then got a small cut on her hip that required a stich to close it...in the process, my vet listened to her heart with a stethoscope and told me she had a pretty significant heart murmer and maybe it was time to retire her, which I did.  She lived until I put her down at 35 yrs. old, so who knows??  My retired gelding died 2 yrs. ago of a heart attack at 28, and I never saw it coming, no history of problems except that his dam also died of a sudden heart attack at 22.

This is such a sad tragedy, but unavoidable in every way, prayers to her family and friends.

We had a perfectly healthy 3 year old boxer drop dead of a heart attack while outside playing. Completely sudden with zero warning signs.

As someone else mentioned, it's hard enough to tell in humans, that are able to vocalize their symptoms. I imagine it is pretty much impossible to predict in animals. I wish there were warning signs because it sure is scary.

I just had an unstarted 2yr old die of a heart condition, what we thought and treated as colic. She was fine at 11pm then 6am the next morning she was having colic symptoms but ended up being a heart problem, there was nothing we could do for her.
